On June 12, Forbes Pharma & Healthcare published an op-ed by DGIM's Dr. Hayden Bosworth entitled, "Why Medication Adherence Needs To Be A National Priority". In the post, Bosworth explains how suboptimal medication use—including taking too much or not taking enough—leads to avoidable annual healthcare costs totaling $300 billion.
What can we do about this? I'm glad you asked. Bosworth is part of a diverse group of experts assembled by Prescriptions for a Healthy America and Duke University’s Medication Adherence Alliance. Together, the group came up with four priorities for fixing this problem:

Change the law to create better incentives

Update laws to improve information sharing

Integrate team-based data sharing and learning

Leverage new and better technologies
