CAGPM Spotlights: Get to Know Our People

By Milla Surjadi

Over the past few months, we talked with some CAGPM team members to get to know them a little better — their roles in the center, what excites them about their work, and some words of advice.

Cameron Miller, PhD, is a Biostatistician III:

What would you tell someone interested in pursuing a career as a biostatistician?

"I would say two things. First, being a biostatistician is a broad and flexible career. There are many options for one’s research focus and role in that research. Second, now is the right time to become a biostatistician. There is such an appreciation for data science now, and with the constant development of new technologies, like sequencing and molecular imaging platforms, there is an overwhelming need to develop new analytical approaches."

Julia Walker is a Project Planner II:

What’s your favorite thing about working for CAGPM?

"It’s just the people. Oh my goodness, the administrative team, we are very supportive. At the end of the day, we always come back to each other and we work towards a common goal, and that it is to help each other succeed. And that’s what we always want. At our bi-weekly meetings, Rhonda always has this last quote: “I only want the best for everybody, so let me know how I can be that resource for you.”

Jack Anderson is a Lab Research Analyst

What’s the most interesting part about working at CAGPM?

A lot of it is the variety. We get to do a lot of different things. And I enjoy the autonomy that I get, where it’s like, “Hey, we get to figure out how to do this because it just hasn’t been done before.”

Wan Xu, PhD, is a Biostatistician III:

What excites you the most about data science?

"The way it quickly and efficiently turns messy and big data into meaningful and valuable insights by combining cutting-edge statistics methodology with computer science."

Maria Iglesias de Ussel, PharmD, PhD, is a Senior Research Scientist:

What would you tell someone interested in pursuing a career as a research scientist?

"Get exposed to as many aspects as possible, not just different research fields, but also complementary disciplines (clinical, regulatory, commercialization, etc.), since translational research requires a holistic approach."
