Caputo leads "Teaching the Teacher"

After Laura Caputo, MD, completed her Internal Medicine residency at Duke and became an attending physician at the Durham VA, she realized transitioning from learner to teacher was difficult and required a different skill set.

"I knew I could benefit from learning from those more experienced in teaching, and I figured if I felt that way, other people might as well."

- Laura Caputo, MD, GIM Assistant Professor of Medicine

"I knew I could benefit from learning from those more experienced in teaching, and I figured if I felt that way, other people might as well,“ says Caputo. She decided to start Teaching the Teacher and recruited experienced faculty to share their knowledge during this week-long lunchtime seminar that takes place at the Durham VA Medical Center. This conversational style seminar shares tips and strategies all geared to improve the experience and quality of teaching on the wards.”  They cover 5 different subjects, one for each day of the week.

The subjects are:

  • Learners - Led by Laura Caputo, MD
  • Efficiency and Time Management - Led by Brian Schneider, MD
  • Teaching at Bedside - Led by Brice Lefler, MD
  • Feedback - Led by Cindy Johnson, MD
  • Evidence Based Medicine - Led by Joel Boggan, MD

The most recent Teaching the Teacher Seminar took place just last week (September 16-20, 2019) and will take place annually. If you are interested in learning more or attending the next session, contact Dr. Laura Caputo.
