Chief Residents for 2013-14 announced

Mary Klotman, MD, chair of the department, and  Aimee Zaas, MD, MHS, program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, have announced the Chief Residents for the 2013-14 academic year.

Duke Chief Resident, 2013-14

Krish Patel, MD
, is a graduate of Duke University and Duke University School of Medicine. Following completion of his PGY-3 year, he will join the Division of Hematology/Oncology as a fellow.

Durham VA Medical Center Chief Resident, 2013-14

Vaishali Patel, MD
, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Medical School. Following completion of her PGY-3 year, she will join the Division of Gastroenterology as a fellow.

Durham Regional Hospital/Ambulatory Chief Resident, 2013-14

Stephen Bergin, MD, is a graduate of the Mississippi College and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. Following completion of his PGY-3 year, he will join the Hospital Medicine faculty at Duke, and ultimately pursue a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
The Chief Resident position is one of the most significant investments made by the Department of Medicine in developing academic leaders. Chief residents serve as the backbone of the residency program – the role is a combination of role model, educator, clinician, cheerleader, listening ear and strategic thinker. Many former chief residents have continued on and become some of the most respected and influential faculty members at Duke.
The new residents will take their posts July 1, 2013. The Assistant Chief Residents (ARCs) for the 2012-13 academic year were also announced:  Hassan Dakik, Megan Diehl, Sam Horr, Nilesh Patel, Lisa Vann, Newton Wiggins,  (Duke); Coral Day, Matt Chung, Ann-Marie Navvar, Ryan Nipp, Bonike Olorontoba, and Nicki Storms (DVAMC);  Blake Cameron, Carrie Horney, Kathleen Kiernan, Charlie McCormick, Scott Westphal, and Tara Weiselberg (DRH). The ARCs are chosen by current Junior Assistant Residents.
