DGIM welcomes 11 new faculty

We are proud to welcome eleven new faculty members to the Division of General Internal Medicine:

Justin Allen, DO
Dr. Allen has been with Duke since he began his Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine fellowship in 2018. He has been a Clinical Associate in the Department of Anesthesiology since July 2019. He will now be a Hospitalist at Duke University Hospital.

Vinay Choksi, MD
Dr. Choksi has been with Duke since he began his Internal Medicine residency in 2018. He will now be a Duke Hospitalist and this year's GME Chief Resident of Quality Improvement and Safety.

John Hoyle, MD
Dr. Hoyle has been with Duke Regional Hospital since 2019. He now becomes a faculty member in our division and will continue to work at Duke Regional Hospital as a Hospitalist.

Claudia Leung, MD
Dr. Leung just completed her combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Duke and now joins our division as a Hospitalist at Duke University Hospital.

Joseph Lunyera, MBChB, MSc 
Dr. Lunyera has been a postdoctural fellow in GIM since 2016 with an expertise in in research methodologies and now joins our faculty.

Jessica Ma, MD
Dr. Ma completed her Palliative Care Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in 2019. Since then she has been with the Durham VA Medical center completing her VA HSR&D Fellowship. Since 2021 she has worked at the Durham VA as a Staff Palliative Care Physician. She now becomes a faculty member in our division and will continue to work at Durham VA Health Care System as a Hospitalist.

Nastassia Schenkel, MD
Dr. Schenkel has been an Internal Medicine physician at Pickett Road since 2017 and now takes the title of Assistant Professor. 

Thomas Shuman, MD
Dr. Shuman comes to us from Carolinas Medical Center (Atrium Health), a former chief resident, now joining our faculty as a hospitalist at Duke Regional Hospital.

Isaac Smith, MD 
Dr. Smith has been with Duke since 2019 when he began his Rheumatology Fellowship. He joined our division as a Hospitalist at Duke University Hospital in January 2021.

Conor Walsh, MD
Dr. Walsh has been with Duke since he began his VA Quality Scholar Fellowship in 2020 at Durham VA Medical Center. He will continue at the Durham VA Medical Center as a Hospitalist.

James Franklin Wharam, MD, MPH
Dr. Wharam comes to us from Harvard Medical School where he was an Associate Professor of Population Medicine and the Director of the Division of Health Policy and Insurance Research. Dr. Wharam completed his residency at Duke University Medical Center in 2004. He returns to join our faculty as an Associate Professor.
