DOC Spotlight: Chenita Jackson

Chenita Jackson started her role as a new patient navigator for the Advance Care Planning initiative at the Duke Outpatient Clinic back in August. To get to know her better, we asked her the following questions:

How did you become interested in Advance Care Planning?
I am currently pursuing my social work degree (BSW) and my interest is geriatrics/gerontology.  Since ACP deals mostly with the elderly population, I figured an internship with the ACP program would be a great start.

How did you get into this position?
I currently work at the DOC and learned of the ACP program there.  I asked Dr. Kim if I could do my internship with the program.  She, in turn, coordinated with my professors at school; as well as Drs. Bowlby, Greenblatt, Lowe and also Indhira Udofia, MSW,  to make sure I would receive the best experience from this internship.

What has been most rewarding for your work?
I have only been doing my internship for two weeks, however, I enjoy being able to help patients voice their issues and concerns to their physicians, family, and friends.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I enjoy reading and traveling

What is a fun fact about yourself?
I love history and actually wanted to be a history teacher at one point.
