By Duke Department of Medicine

Professor of Medicine Dr. Saumil Chudgar (Hospital Medicine) has transformed medical education at Duke — and beyond — earning him the Department of Medicine’s 2026 Education Achievement Award.

A professor of medicine and associate dean for curricular affairs, Chudgar has played a central role in shaping the educational experience of thousands of medical students, residents, and junior faculty.

Nominated by division chief Dr. Noppon Setji, he was described as a singular force in undergraduate medical education.

Dr. Setji noted that few individuals in the department’s history have had such a broad and lasting impact on learners. Dr. Chudgar’s teaching is consistently described as approachable, enthusiastic, and psychologically safe — qualities that foster curiosity, resilience, and growth.

Colleagues credit him with transforming internal medicine education at Duke while also influencing national conversations on curriculum and teaching practices. His “upbeat, supportive, and genuinely joyful” approach not only elevates learners but also inspires fellow educators to strive for excellence.

In recognizing Chudgar, the department celebrates a leader whose dedication to teaching has shaped careers, strengthened the community, and redefined what it means to educate the next generation of physicians.
