Drs. Scott Palmer, Chris Beyrer Inducted into Association of American Physicians

Scott Palmer, MD, MHS, the Donald F. Fortin. MD, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and vice chair for research in the Department of Medicine, and Chris Beyrer, MD, MPH, Gary Hock Distinguished Professor in Global Health, professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, and director of Duke Global Health Institute, have been inducted into the Association of American Physicians (AAP).

It is the highest level of academic excellence and achievement among physician researchers.

Dr. Scott Palmer

Dr. Palmer is a clinical and translational investigator whose work has advanced our understanding of disease mechanisms in fibrotic lung disease and improved the care of patients with advanced lung disease and undergoing lung transplantation. His successful research career includes over 20 years of continuous NIH funding and over 300 publications.

He has held key leadership roles in national and international pulmonary and transplant societies, has chaired many sessions at national and international meetings, served on the editorial board for prominent journals, and serves regularly on NIH study sections.

Dr. Palmer is also a dedicated mentor to trainees and junior faculty, leading or co-leading institutional T32 and R38 training programs and having personally mentored over 40 pre- and post-doctoral trainees, many of whom now lead successful and independent research careers.

Dr. Chris Beyrer

Dr. Beyrer is an internationally recognized epidemiologist who has worked on the front lines of HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 treatment and research. He is a renowned humanitarian human rights physician who has worked globally with vulnerable populations.

Dr. Beyrer, who has worked on COVID-19 vaccine trials since 2020, currently serves as senior scientific liaison to the COVID-19 Vaccine Prevention Network. He is past president of the International AIDS Society, the world’s largest body of HIV professionals, and has served as an advisor to the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, the National Institutes of Health’s Office of AIDS Research, the U.S. Military HIV Research Program, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization, among many other organizations. 

He is the author of more than 450 scientific papers and was recognized in 2022 as one of the world’s most cited scientists.
