REACH NC is a Web portal (http://reachnc.org/) that enables users to search, browse and find thousands of experts and assets within North Carolina higher education and research institutions.
REACH NC profiles are created by SciVal Experts Profiles, which uses technology that harvests an individual’s publications from the SCOPUS database and creates keywords using terminology in publication titles and abstracts. This technology works well in disciplines that publish peer-reviewed journal articles. New publications are added and “fingerprinted” automatically, with substantial quality control and review by SciVal, so no input from faculty members is required to create or maintain profiles. SciVal Experts Profiles cannot be edited, although publications that are incorrectly attributed can be removed by emailing reachnc@duke.edu.
The SciVal profiles in REACH NC are a preliminary step toward developing and displaying robust faculty profiles for all Duke faculty through Scholars@Duke, a faculty activities system being developed in the Office of the Provost in close partnership with the School of Medicine. Scholars@Duke will aggregate information about all Duke faculty from institutional and public sources and will enable users to edit and customize profiles.
