Duke GI competes with UNC to raise money for Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America

The Duke GI team, No Guts No Glory, is in the last few days of a close competition with UNC to raise money for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.

Team members, including Gastroenterology faculty, nurses, providers and patients, will gather Sat., April 30, for Triangle Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis, a 2-3 mile walk to raise money for support services and research for inflammatory bowel disease.

"This is the biggest fundraiser we do during the year," said Nancy McGreal, MD, assistant professor of medicine (Gastroenterology) and pediatrics. "Last year the event raised $120,000, and Duke raised about $14,000 of that, beating the UNC GI team."

Dr. McGreal serves on the board for the Durham and Charlotte chapters of CCFA and has been involved with the organization since she started fellowship in 2004.

The Duke IBD No Guts, No Glory team is hoping for a repeat win over UNC, and McGreal says it's a close race in the final days - and one with high stakes. After losing to the Duke IBD team last year, UNC GI division chief Nick Shaheen, MD, MPH, had to wear a Duke tie for a day.

"It's a nice event. The patients enjoy seeing their providers out at the walk, and we enjoy supporting it," McGreal said.
