The Duke O'Brien Center for Kidney Research is accepting applications to its POWER Undergraduate Research Experience for Summer 2017.

Through the POWER (PrOgram to aWaken Early Interest in Research) program, selected undergraduates (or medical school-bound graduates) will

  • Perform cutting-edge research with a Duke investigator for 8 weeks during the summer of 2017 (June 5 – July 31). POWER students will receive hands-on training in clinical, translational, or basic science research.
  • Attend weekly seminars on biomedical research approaches and strategies.
  • Attend a DOCK-sponsored symposium on novel advances in the science of kidney and cardiovascular disease.
  • Present their work at an end-of-summer forum to summarize progress and propose future directions.
  • Receive career guidance from a dedicated research mentor.
  • Receive a $3,000 stipend to support living expenses during the experience.

Interested applicants should submit to Steven Crowley (steven.d.crowley@duke.edu):

  • Cover letter (one page limit) describing the applicant’s interest in the POWER program and goals for a summer research experience. The applicant can specify the broad area of research interest (clinical or basic science/laboratory), and can suggest possible mentors if these have been previously identified (not required).
  • Resume (two page limit)
  • 1 letter of recommendation with contact information from a faculty preceptor of a previous science course or research experience

Review of applications will begin Feb. 1, 2017 with a final deadline for all application materials of Feb. 21. Competitive applicants will be invited for a phone or in-person interview. Learn more.

Awardees will be notified beginning in late February 2017.
