Duke Science and Society to offer SciComm Fellows Program

Update: Please note that the application deadline has been extended to July 31, 2014. Duke Science and Society is launching a new SciComm Fellows Program that will help faculty develop communication skills and put those skills into action. On four Fridays this fall, Fellows will:
  • Explore the empirical benefits of communicating science
  • Develop speaking, writing, and storytelling practices for diverse audiences
  • Learn to answer difficult, controversial, and critical questions from the media
  • Tweet, blog, write op-eds and present their research to the public
  • Prepare policy briefs
  • Engage with policymakers and funders in Washington D.C.
Training sessions will include academic specialists in science communication, professional science storytellers, policy experts, and hands-on spoken and written communication exercises. As part of a diverse class, Fellows will develop skills essential to doing meaningful outreach with real impact, including opportunities to brief Congress and participate in media interviews the following spring. Who? All regular-rank faculty members are eligible, but admission is competitive. When? Four Fridays in Fall 2014: Sept. 19, Oct. 24, Nov. 7, and Dec. 5 Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and include continental breakfast and lunch. Applicants will be notified no later than Aug. 15, 2014. How much does it cost? Training costs for attended sessions are paid for by Science & Society; if you participate in all four sessions, there is no charge to Fellows. However, for every missed session, Fellows will be charged $500. All admitted applicants must provide a cost center or fund code to which such costs will be charged.
