Erica Malkasian will join the Department of Medicine as Director of Research Administration, effective October 1, announced Cathy Wood, vice chair for administration.
Malkasian is currently executive director of clinical research at Baylor College of Medicine. She will serve in the role most recently filled by Laurianne Torres, who moved to the School of Medicine earlier this year to be associate dean for planning.
As director of research administration, Malkasian will manage and oversee the programmatic and administrative aspects of all government and non-government sponsored research activities for the Department of Medicine, with department-owned research direct expenditures of more than $65 million. She will be charged with continuously driving improvement across those activities, while also refining the administrative structure to provide best-in-class services that support our investigator success.
Malkasian will lead the DOM Research Administration team, which comprises more than 50 individuals, including grant contract administrators and other support roles.
"That team has been restructured and expanded over the last few years to provide a more transparent and responsive level of service to investigators across the Department," said Wood. "Erica brings her deep experience in research operations and management, and I know she will continue to refine our research administration infrastructure and procedures."
Malkasian will also work closely with Scott Palmer, MD, MHS, vice chair for research, and the research leadership team to support faculty research efforts across the Department. This will include strategic development of new proposals and enhancing support for faculty submissions.
Malkasian earned her master of business administration degree at the University of Virginia, and her bachelor of science degree in community health from Texas A&M University.
