Adam Tosh, MD, was recently promoted to Assistant Professor in our division and is a hospitalist at Duke University Hospital. We asked Dr. Tosh several questions about his career and life. Learn more about him in our interview below.
What brought you to Duke?
I attended college in the area (at the university across the tracks) and always knew that North Carolina would be my home after I finished my medical training. Duke's wonderful balance of education, research and clinical care was what set it apart in my decision to attend here as a faculty member. Durham's mix of city life with proximity to great outdoor activities was also a big draw for me.
What are your interests in the field?
My greatest passion is teaching, and I am very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to teach in both undergraduate and graduate medical education. I currently teach in a diverse array of settings, including intern report, the resident teaching service, and - starting next year - the resident evidence-based medicine course.
How did you get in to this specific field?
Ever since I started residency, I knew that I would likely go into Hospital Medicine. I loved all the subspecialties, and I would never be able to choose just one of them. Staying general keeps me on my toes, as I am always trying to keep up with all the major research and developments from each field.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
Caring for and playing with my 2 daughters (1 and 3 years) is a great source of enjoyment. When I have some personal time, I spend it playing jazz piano and hiking at the Eno River.

Any recent books you've read that you would like to share?
I recently read Dune for the first time. It's amazing how this work of fiction from over a half century ago has stayed relevant and consistently tops the charts as one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I was a whitewater rafting guide in college on the Nolichucky River on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. It was one of my favorite summers, with lots of peaceful, fun, and exciting memories.
What is your favorite food?
NC BBQ. I may get some angry stares on this one, but I prefer Western NC BBQ sauce.
What is your favorite restaurant?
For a special night out with my wife Katie, Littler in Downtown Durham would be our favorite. But on a more casual basis, our family eats a LOT of Mellow Mushroom.
