The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation is seeking nominations of junior-faculty candidates to apply for its Clinical Investigator Award program.
That program supports the most promising early career physician-scientists willing to devote their efforts to the development and application of new diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies for cancer and cancer prevention through clinical investigation.
The award will provide $450,000 over three years in financial support for the investigator’s scientific needs. In addition, the Foundation will retire up to $100,000 of any medical school debt owed by the awardee.
Institutional nomination process and deadline
Duke Cancer Institute will nominate up to five candidates. Anyone interested in applying for this award should send an NIH style biosketch for the applicant and the mentor and a two-page application outlining the position of the applicant and mentor, summarizing the mentor’s training record for the past 10 years, and briefly describing the research project, to erin.carr@duke.edu by Wed., Dec. 3. Applications will be reviewed the week of December 8 and nominees will be notified of the review outcome no later than Dec. 19.
The Foundation is seeking independent investigators engaged in disease-oriented research that is characterized by exceptional innovation and creativity. The goal is to support the best young physician-scientists whose work is likely to meaningfully impact the practice of cancer medicine. Preference is given to those whose research adheres to the “Handshake Rule,” meaning that the physician will conduct research studies that directly involve patients. Damon Runyon also has a novel partnership with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), which gives Damon Runyon Clinical Investigators unique open access to the NIH Clinical Center. The goal of this partnership is to give investigators the opportunity to partner with the NIH/NCI, allowing them to tap into the special expertise and resources at the Clinical Center to undertake pilot studies of specific diseases and to develop collaborative partnerships that accelerate clinical and translational cancer research.
