Funding opps: Mandel Center innovative research seed and fellowship grants

By etm18@dhe.duke.edu
The Mandel Center for Hypertension and Atherosclerosis at Duke has been established to advance scientific understanding in the areas of hypertension, atherosclerosis, and related cardiovascular diseases. Based on the goals of the Mandel Foundation, our vision for this center is built on our commitment to positively influence research in the fields of hypertension and atherosclerosis by creating an expanding core of established faculty, early career fellows, and students, all focused on pursuing knowledge in these areas. To promote its mission, the Center is requesting proposals for seed grants to support innovative research into the causes and treatment of hypertension, atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases; the center is also requesting proposals for seed funding for one 1-year fellowship grant. Seed grant funds are available for 4 one-year grants of $45,000 plus F&A costs at 15%. Funds may be used for salaries, supplies, support of Core facilities necessary for the project, or other relevant expenses to support the proposed studies. The explicit purpose of this Seed Grant program is to encourage new areas of collaborative investigation that will lead to successful applications for external funding from NIH and other agencies in thematic areas relevant to the mission of the Mandel Foundation. Each proposal will include an executive summary paragraph written in lay person’s language plus 1-2 page application covering background, specific aims and approaches and key references. Applicants should also provide a brief budget and NIH-style biosketches for the Principal Investigator and other key personnel who will be in the research. Each Applicant must be a Member of the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) at the time the application is reviewed. Please email DUKECVRC@dm.duke.edu for information on CVRC membership. [box]Applications are due Mon., Dec. 2, 2013 with the expectation that projects will be initiated upon the receipt of funds on Jan. 1, 2014.
