Due to the forecast for winter weather, Duke University and Duke University Health System will activate the severe weather and emergency conditions policy from noon Wednesday through noon Thursday. In-person classes between noon Wednesday and noon Thursday will be canceled. If instructors are able to provide sufficient notice to students, they may transition their in-person classes during that time to an online format, but students should not be penalized if unable to attend. "The Healthcare Pivot": Schulman's Grand Rounds

The speaker for medicine grand rounds in the Department of Medicine, Friday, July 21, was Dr. Kevin Schulman, Professor of Medicine and member of the Division of General Internal Medicine. His presentation was entitled, "The Healthcare Pivot: Technology and the Transformation of Healthcare". Schulman spoke of the national concern about the cost of healthcare in the United States and what it will take to get us out of this conundrum.

Schulman is a renowned researcher. His interests include health services research and policy, including access to care and the impact of reimbursement and regulatory policies on clinical practice; health economics and economic evaluation in clinical research; and medical decision making, especially in patients with life-threatening conditions. His work has been published in many high-impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA. He teaches courses in biotechnology, health policy, and health IT strategy.
