From the Director
Greetings from Academic Internal Medicine Week in Philadelphia! Drs. Cooney, Boggan, Chudgar, Zipkin and I, as well as your incoming Chiefs Amanda, Caroline, and Jared, and also our awesome Program Admin Lynsey are excited to be learning new things to bring back to the best IM Program in the world! (that’s us :>).
Our biggest kudos goes to everyone – during the tragedy in Durham this past week, everyone stepped up and helped however they could (Kyle Guerink and Sheila Sherzoy taking over the non-code triage part of the ED, the ICUs and Gen Med teams working to ensure transfers and discharges happened quickly and safely to prepare for a potential rush of admissions, those on flexible rotations offering to help out in the ED and in the hospital, and more). Dr. David Gallagher, as well as Dr. Josh Broder and the ED leadership send their thank you to the teams as well. While we wish that tragedies did not happen, a bright spot is seeing the teamwork and generosity of our #DukeFamily.
Thank you to all who filled out their ACGME survey. At the time of writing this, we are at 85.7% completion (higher by 1% than last year!). We don’t get results until June but thank you all for taking time to participate in this national survey. The end of the year is going to be filled with various surveys, so please take the time to help us improve ….. soon you will see CulturePulse (Duke Health sponsored), an internal GME Survey from Dr. Kuhn, as well as some end of year surveying from us. We will try to keep this minimal and focused on immediate questions we can use to improve our learning and working environment here at Duke.
I have met with almost all the fellowship-bound JARs – if we haven’t met, please let Ernest know to schedule a meeting. If you are planning on getting a job next year in Primary Care or Hospital Medicine, please meet with me as well so we can make sure you are getting the advice and mentoring you need for your next steps. SARs, it is crunch time to get that procedure log finished. Yes, there soon will be changes to IM procedure requirements, but NOT YET, so it the log still needs to be complete before graduation.
Everyone looked so nice on Friday! Many apologies for the weather-induced picture cancellation. Rain date to be announced ASAP.
Don't forget: The MRRC will host "Financial Literacy Beyond Student Loan Repayment," featuring Marc Flur, Senior Consultant, Marsh & McLenna Agency at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., April 16, in DMP 2W96.
Kudos
Kudos this week go to Sarah Nelson for her excellent SAR talk, to Madhu Eluri for a fantastic Chair’s Conference, to Jeff Ashton from Tony G for outstanding work and patient care on 9300, to Courtney Lamberton from Anesthesiology attending Yuriy Bronshteyn for outstanding and patient-centered care for a critically ill patient at DRH, and to Mike Grant from Matt Labriola for going above and beyond to coordinate care for a veteran. Kudos from Bryan Golubski to Josh Lee and Tamara Saint Surin for their level headedness in a busy night in MICU and to Chidi Egwim from Alex Grubb and Joe Lerman for going above and beyond to ensure great care for a veteran
