From the Director

Hard to believe we are already at mid-August! Vacation was fantastic, and it is great to be back, too. There are a lot of events and other happenings this time of year.  We look forward to seeing everyone at the noon conference Battle of the Boards today!  This week also includes our Intern Retreat on Thursday (thanks in advance to those who are covering the interns).

Don't forget to RSVP to the Chair's Welcome Party on Aug. 23 on the President's Terrace of the Washington Duke Inn! We'll have food and drinks and a chance to socialize as a program. Families are welcome. See Paperless Post email to RSVP.

JARS – Short term global health rotation applications are coming soon – due on Sept. 30.  Keep on the lookout for an email that explains all the potential elective options for (are you really talking about this in August?) SAR year so that you can ask questions and make decisions about your SAR year. 

Intern ResCo elections are underway – we look forward to welcoming interns onto the ResCo.

Lots of kudos this week! First congratulations to Joel Boggan and Lin Ong on their wedding this past weekend – what a fun and beautiful evening! Other kudos to Caitlin Driscoll, Peggy Sahu, Maggie Coates and Harrison Ferlauto from Dr. Brice Lefler for caring, compassionate and outstanding patient care at the VA, to James Deardorff from Brice for his great summary of a very complex case at intern report, to “JD” John Davy from Dr. Jenny Van Kirk his excellent patient care and procedural skills on a very busy day on the procedure service, to our OTHER “JD” (JD Ike) from a Duke gen med patient for phenomenal patient care and listening skills, to Nadia Yimer, Ahmad Mourad and Cassie Latredou from Dr. Jim Howard for great work on Duke Night Float, and to Tammy Hsu (intern), Aarti Thakkar (subintern), and Surya Ravichandran (MS2) from Qasim Hussaini for working hard and having a great attitude on Duke Gen Med, to Mark Robertshaw and Qasim Hussaini for fantastic SAR talks, to Stacy Bagrova for her quick recognition of a critical lab value and subsequent patient triage, to Nathan Goodwin for his great bedside manner and management of some sick patients this week from Diana Mosquera, to night float team Cassie Latredou, Maggie Salinger and Nadia Yimer for being such a great team and to the night hospitalists for their support from Ahmad Mourad, to Ryan Keane and Jon Reichstein from Anthony Horton for outstanding patient care and triage overnight at the VA, to Nick Kamp, Chelsea Perfect, Geargin Wilson, Nicole Dalal and Hannah Cunningham for outstanding teamwork and patient care from Jenny Van Kirk, to Caitlin Driscoll for her physical exam skills that rapidly got a patient to the OR (both from Anish Badjatiya), and to Allen Witt for a fantastic Chair’s Conference.

Review clinical pearls from resident report on the ACR Teach Blog!
On many rotations residents generate excellent clinical teaching points that the ACRs send out for residents on that rotation. Now, this high-yield information will be available to everyone via the ACR Teach Blog! As part of the new Duke General Medicine Teaching Service website, the ACRs will regularly update the ACR Teach Blog with valuable information in case you’re on a different rotation. Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
