From the Director
August! Let’s go! We get to start August off with our first “severe weather” for the academic year. Thus far, it just looks really rainy and windy. Please pay attention to the Duke emails about any weather alerts. We also will update you should there be anything you need to know about Duke operations during TS Isiais. We tend to deal much better here in N.C. with rain than snow, as a general rule!
Please see the following for dependent care financial assistance application from Duke Health: A second application round for the Duke Health Dependent Care Financial Assistance Fund is now open. All Duke Health team members in good standing are eligible to apply to the program, which is intended to help offset the costs of dependent care during our COVID-19 response efforts. New applications are being accepted through Aug. 28. Team members who have already received support through the program cannot apply a second time. Learn more and access the application here.
Kudos
Lots of kudos this week, starting with Nick Ashur and Ryan Keane for outstanding SAR talk and (ahem!) newly named COHEN CONFERENCE, respectively. Additional kudos to Sarah Greene from sub-I Stephanie Skove for being an amazing patient advocate on Duke GM, to Sam Rauch from Jawan Abdulrahim for being a great leader at the VA these past 2 weeks and for going above and beyond for his team, to Andrew Andreae, Saad Atiq, and Caitlin Driscoll for being so selfless and offering to cover at a moment's notice! And second, to Vivian Chen-Andrews for doing an amazing job for the past 5 weeks at the VA and providing excellent patient care from Sean Taasan, to 9300 teach SARs Mike Burt and Hannah Robinson from oncology fellow Chen Lin for being a tremendous help on a busy busy service, to Roshni Dhoot from Govind Krishnan for excellent patient safety skills, to Hayley Cunningham from her DOC patient, to Katherine Zhou for her hard work, organization, and overall excellent care of our patients at the VA from Ceshae Harding, and to Cam Oswalt from Lynette Staplefoot-Boynton for being a great SAR on Duke GM. Kudos from Sriya Muralidharan to Casey Howe and Seabass Franco for being spectacularly conscientious and compassionate on an unbelievably challenging shift and to Casey Howe from Dr. Dan Kaplan for being a fantastic night resident. There were tons of tacos sent out as well (a “taco avalanche” indeed), including to the CCU crew of Sebastian Estrada, Rachel Tobin, Sam Dizon, Micah Schub, Matt Goodwin, Omar Martinez-Uribe and Swapna Musunur from Daniel Bernstein for all the amazing work they did as a team, to the VA team of Brittany Chapman and Tyler Couch, to the 9100 rockstars Hubie Haywood, Ryne Ramaker and Bari Rosenberg (5 weeks! You did it!), and CRUNCHWRAP SUPREMES ordered for the entire intern class from John Davy for month one!!
Many thanks to Dr. Katherine Pollak for a Zoom session for the SARs on Zoom interviews. So meta. If you haven’t signed up for a 1:1 practice session with Dr. Pollack, I highly recommend doing so!
PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to our SAR talk speaker this week, Payton Kendsersky for her article recently published with Dr. Cary Ward! Kendsersky P, Ward C. Cardiol Clin 2020 May;38(2):239-242. doi: 10.1016/j.ccl.2020.02.002. Right Ventricular Failure and Congenital Heart Disease.
Have a great week!

PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
