Internal Medicine Residency News, August 30th 2021

From the Director

We are nearing the end of August – thanks to everyone for their tremendous work during the first two months of the year.  We are really in the midst of one of our largest waves of the pandemic, and this weighs heavily on all of us.  Add to that a hurricane to the South and so much more – an extra measure of grace and kindness to all who we encounter is definitely indicated.  Taking care of yourself can be extra challenging – please remember to reach out to any of us in leadership, to your colleagues, or visit the website for additional resources available.

Kudos
Kudos this week to Hope Glowacki on her awesome Cohen Conference, to Sriya Muralidharan from Dr. Jane Gagliardi for excellent leadership on Duke GM, to Kelly Flynn from Dr. Dani Zipkin for recognizing acuity in a patient calling after hours to the DOC, to Peggy Sahu from Erin Song for helping in the ICU, to Gracie Ernstberger from Shannon Herndon for an awesome first call at the VA, and also to Neesha Nama from Shannon Herndon for being an outstanding day float!

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Daniel Bernstein for his publication in Annals of Thoracic Surgery Mitral Valve Translocation: A Novel Operation for the Treatment of Secondary Mitral Regurgitation Chetan Pasrija, Rachael W. Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Contributed by Daniella Zipkin

Ambulatory Life
Even though clinical acuity is lower in the clinic, the pace of visits and multi-tasking through multiple clinical, social and financial variables can be exhausting. You may feel out of sorts in the clinic even after you’ve gotten into the zone on inpatient. This is normal! Please reach out to Dani or any chief if you want to talk more about adjusting to the ambulatory part of your training.

Continuity
So, while I’m talking about getting into “the zone” in ambulatory, it bears mentioning that continuity is the key to making it easier. Seeing patients back who you know, who you have some traction with, is critical. So, give out your cards, tell patients your name over and over again, and advise them the even if they are given a different doctor at their next appointment, they can call the clinic and switch to you!!

Maestro Training
For those of you at DOC and Pickett, you’ll see a half day pop up in block 4 or 5 called “Maestro”. This will be self-directed learning with Dani Zipkin’s recorded Maestro training. It is very detailed, and you will actually need the 3+ hours to get it done. We hope it’s helpful. Please reach out to Dani with any Maestro questions.
