Internal Medicine Residency News, Dec. 16, 2019

From the Director

It’s the last MED RES NEWS of the year! Actually, the last MED RES NEWS of the decade.  What started out as a Sunday night informational email from the office grew to adding kudos, photos and pubmed from the program. We used to have an article summary too (“What I Read This Week”) from the program leadership. With help from Anton Zuiker and now Elizabeth McCamic, we graduated from a basic email to a searchable, well formatted weekly masterpiece. Many thanks to all for your readership and to the late Randy Heffelfinger, Jen Averitt, Lynsey Michnowicz, Anton Zuiker and Elizabeth McCamic for their hard work on keeping this going for nearly a decade.

Thank you to Dr. Cooney, the Department of Medicine and our very talented Chiefs (Amanda, Caroline, Jared and Lara) for a fantastic DOM Holiday Party! Keep sending your pics to Kayla for use in our slideshows. A great time had by all.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to our recruitment report presenter Matt Harbrecht, to Michael Burt for a fantastic chair’s conference, to Matt Carlisle and Melanie Cabezas for receiving gold stars from a patient on gen med, to Alex Sullivan from Dr. Danielle Richardson at DRH who heard a lot of compliments about Alex’s care in the clinic from a patient she admitted, to Cindy Pabon and Nadia Yimer from Sean Taasan and Aaditya Khatri for being amazing JARs who covered our pagers to allow us to go to the holiday party, as well as for always keeping us well fed on 28 hour VA call! To our My Take teams of Sonali Bracken, Alex Grubb, Ryan Keane, Anthony Horton, Jo Cavalier and Matt Harbrecht. Also big thanks to our tour guides Akash Goyal, Stacy Bagrova, Nick Kamp, Shelia Sherzoy, Alie Mara, Sonali Bracken and Sunny Chung.

We have our last recruiting week of 2019 this week – many thanks to all for your help in bringing in a fantastic intern class.  We will have some more opportunities in January after the break.

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to the team of Anish Badjatiya for his recent paper in Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions “Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 DM and Peripheral Arterial Disease – Results from the EXSCEL Trial” with mentors Schuyler Jones, Manesh Patel, Rob Mentz and Adrian Hernandez.

Have a great week!
Aimee

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Sonal Patel and Leigh Wynkoop

Thanks to those who completed the continuity clinic survey for PRIME. We’ve already put our thinking caps on about some of the issues you raised about how to improve PRIME and have started discussions with the staff about some of those. Your feedback really does help us. (And yes, some things are “greater VA” things and out of our hands….)  Here’s a tip: If you want to decrease your alert burden, be sure you are renewing medications at visits (and encourage your teammates to do the same)!

Ambulatory Town Hall for PRIME residents is on Wed. Dec 18 at PRIME – stay tuned for more info from your chiefs. It’s an opportunity for you to have a forum to talk with us about things on your mind and for us to disseminate information to you in a larger group.

PRINTER: Due to software changes, you’ll need to reinstall your printer on each computer. Please use ONLY the front desk printer which is D1102DY797. (The hall printer should be reserved for clinic flow/ patient check-in use.) Instructions are on AgileMD.

Our clinic schedules currently are built until February 21, and we’re hoping to open up some March appointments soon. Your awesome chiefs and Emily Sikes are working hard to get the schedules to us further in advance. This means if your patient needs a follow up before 2-3 months’ time, please send them to the front desk to see if we can go ahead and get an appointment scheduled.

Department of Medicine Giving Campaign
This holiday season, the Department of Medicine is asking for your help to support Durham children and families. Now through the end of the year, we're asking you to consider making a donation to Partners for Youth Opportunity (PYO), a local nonprofit organization in our community. Partners for Youth Opportunity provides Durham youth with opportunities to connect, develop, and contribute through mentoring, employment, and educational support. Learn more about the campaign.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
