From the Director

It’s official! The last MED RES NEWS of 2017. What an extraordinary year. Thank you from myself and the entire Zaas family for all of the support, hard work, outstanding patient care, fun, friendship, and teaching you have provided over the past year.  I have every confidence that 2018 is going to be fantastic and look forward to all of the great things to come.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Steph Garbarino from Josh Broder in the ED for outstanding care, to Matt Labriola and Stephen Kimani from Anish Badjatiya for amazing emergency care of a very ill patient, to Brittany Gatta, Kent Feng, and Irena Tan for being incredible and supportive teammates in the CCU (from Matt Labriola) and to Anish Badjatiya and Diana Mosquera for each providing great hand off and differential during codes. More kudos from medical student Sarah Greene to Diana Mosquera, Kyle Guerink and Melodi Whitley for being amazing gen med interns, to Keva Garg from one of the applicants for driving them back to their hotel (yes, an applicant sent kudos! Amazing!), to Toi Spates and Tamara Saint Surin from Vishal Vashistha for outstanding transitions of care at the VA and to Talisha Ramchal from Filley Howe for coordination of care for a sick patient headed to the MICU. Also kudos to Shai Posner for a great resident report for the applicants and to Lauren Ranard for an outstanding chair’s conference. Many thanks and kudos to our MY TAKE teams of Brittany Gatta, AJ Blood, Keva Garg, Shaki Salvador and Dan Maselli, and to our tour guides Dan Maselli, Tara Holder, Jasmine Washington, and Nate Moulton.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed this year to Toys for Tots! We donated over 3 large boxes of toys!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Staffing changes in PRIME clinic
We wish Christie Lucero, LPN, a fond farewell as she moves westward to work at the Salisbury VA. She’s been with us for two years and has been a true asset to PRIME. We are going to miss her spirit and care of our Veterans but wish her and her family the best with this move.

Meanwhile, welcome to April Brewington, LPN, who has been floating intermittently to PRIME but will be stepping in more with Christie’s departure.  We are glad to have her join our team. She works also at the Tammy Lynn Center in Raleigh with developmentally disabled children and adults.

VA is actively working on procuring Shingrix vaccine.  Also be aware that the meningococcal vaccine reminder has been updated to capture patients who need Menactra and/or Bexsero. Recommendations for specific patient populations have been posted in each exam room.

Per our conversation at the recent Town Hall, Dan Maselli championed revising the yellow patient intake sheet – no more ROS sheets with every item circled! Please leave this sheet in the check-out box for the nurses. Also the green routing sheet has been updated – be aware the layout is a bit different, but you have a bit more room to write instructions/goals for the patient to take home (along with their updated med list, of course). Continue to renew chronic/ongoing meds at each visit with a year’s supply (or at least enough to get to next appt if you don’t want to do a year).

Lastly, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy some time of rest and restoration – we’ll see you back in the new year!

Narrative Medicine

It is time to get pumped for our next Narrative Medicine meeting coming up on Jan. 19! Our first few sessions with Dr. Pisetsky have been incredible, and we are so excited to have Dinushika to precept our next meeting! The prompt will be to write a story from the perspective of one of your patients. This will be a great time to flex our creativity and reflect on the experiences that our patients have. If you are interested in joining us, please send Matthew Labriola an e-mail so we know how many to expect and can plan out  how many narratives can be discussed. We usually meet around 6:30 p.m. and wrap up by 8:30-9 p.m. depending on the numbers. We are limited to 10 participants.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
