From the Director

intern valentine's day gatheringFun-bruary continues! Thanks to Lynsey and Tia for passing out our Valentine gummy bears last week! And to the Stead leaders for breakfast on Valentine’s Day. This week, we have ResTeering on Wednesday night at Urban Ministries followed by the Duke-UNC basketball game viewing party hosted by GME! Let’s GO Duke! Thanks to Ariel Lefland for hosting an intern Valentine’s get together (see photo)!

We also have our first fellowship info night on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Med Res Library. If you are a rising SAR (or an intern planning to do the CIP match), this meeting is for you! We will hold the same meeting next Tuesday as well, so please plan on attending one or the other (same content). If you are unable to attend either meeting, please let me know, and we can get you the information in a 1:1 meeting.

We are looking forward to the NC ACP meeting on Friday, as well as, the CHARITY AUCTION!! It is SUCH a great event; we look forward to seeing you all there!

Clinic Corner: PRIME

PRIME clinic staffLPN Liz Dyer has moved to the Raleigh VA, which is much closer to her home. We will miss her! Here’s a photo of her and some of the staff on National Wear Red Day.

The PRIME staff will be having a retreat the morning of March 1 for team-building to continue our efforts to make PRIME a high functioning team-based clinic for all of us to work in.

John Paul Shoup pulled some numbers for our patient-provider continuity and LEAD Chester Kao did a deep dive into what might be best practices to glean from the highest-scoring teams. Things to focus on:

  1. Be SURE you have the RIGHT clinic chosen in the drop-down area of the RTC order (you cannot just type in the comment field; you have to manually change the clinic for someone else)
  2. Use the color coded team sheets to determine follow-up for each of your patients
  3. Please emphasize to patients assigned to you that YOU would like to see them back in clinic next time and for the patient to do their best to schedule with YOU.

If you have admin/comp time assigned, please check in with Leigh/Dr. Patel; we are working on rolling out a new CPRS note template to be used to reflect that you’ve reviewed the charts of high-risk patients, and includes specific areas to highlight potential interventions.

When the next continuity clinic survey opens (which is soon!) PLEASE complete it. We really do value your input and are constantly making changes to make PRIME a great place for you to be.

We’ve accumulated a bunch of “WOW” forms for our residents – shouts out to Eric Wei, Shannon Niedermeyer, Tanmay Gokhale, Tara Holder, Nathan Moulton, and Chris Pumill who were singled out by patients for their excellence.

All of you are doing great work every day, both in PRIME and in your other clinical settings. Thanks for all you do to care for patients and for each other – and take care of yourselves too in this flu season!

Narrative Medicine Returns
We're super excited to announce our next Narrative Medicine session on Mon., March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Med Res! We are incredibly lucky to have Dr. Galanos (AND potentially Dr. Barfield as well) to precept our next meeting! Our prompt this session will be "Write from the perspective of a patient's family member/friend." By choosing this theme, we hope to inspire you to think about the thoughts, fears, and uncertainty that loved ones experience while helping us care for their family/friends in the hospital.

If you are interested in joining us, please send Matt Labriola an e-mail so we know how many to expect and can plan out how many narratives can be discussed. Dinner/drinks will be provided. To ensure a safe and intimate space, we are limited to ~12 participants so make sure to grab a spot!

Join PWIM for a special presentation on leadership skills. Learn strategies for how to be an effective leader, from advocating for yourself to communication strategies for success. Mary Trabert, MBA, CAPM, is the Administrative Director of the Duke Center for Health Measurement and an experienced speaker on practical leadership skills.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
