From the Director

Happy rainy Monday! The new year is no less busy than before – many thanks to everyone for their continued excellent patient care and hard work. We are in the home stretch of recruitment, and we appreciate your continued efforts to bring in an outstanding intern class!

We are looking forward to a GME sponsored visit from national expert on physician well-being, depression and suicide, Dr. Carol Bernstein. She will be visiting Duke during the week of Jan. 27 – stay tuned for more announcements about her visit and our chances to hear from her.

Thank you to all who have scheduled their semi-annual meetings with Dr. Hargett or me. We are wrapping up the meetings in the coming two weeks. If you haven’t met yet, please be sure to check in with Lynsey and sign up.

(“He really enhanced rounds by thinking critically about each patient and sharing his thought process”), and to Vinay Choksi from Mitch Black for outstanding work on the procedures service. Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

On behalf of the residents and faculty at Pickett we would sincerely like to thank Dr. David Halpern for precepting in our resident clinic. Dr. Halpern will be expanding his role as Duke Primary Care’s Medical Director for Quality and taking an additional role as Associate Medical Director of High Value Analytics. He’ll be working to provide strategic input on data/analytic needs as Duke Health continues to transition away from fee-for-service and into the value-based care landscape. 

At the same time we’d like to welcome Dr. Denise Pong to the resident clinic. Dr. Pong, a Duke Medical School graduate, joined Pickett Road last year after completing her internal medicine residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She will be an excellent addition to our team!

We’d also like to welcome Dr. Chris Fink who joins our practice. Dr. Fink has been in practice since 2003 in Holland, Michigan.  We are excited to have him join our group.

Proud to be GIM breakfast on Jan. 31
The Division of General Internal Medicine will host a Proud to be GIM breakfast beginning at 7:15 a.m. on Jan. 31, ahead of Medicine Grand Rounds. Drop by to mingle with GIM faculty and stay for a  MGR presentation by Nia Mitchell and David Edelman.

Duke APAMSA meeting Jan. 15
Duke APAMSA (Asian and Pacific American Medical Student Association) will be hosting an Asian Women in Medicine Wine and Cheese in TSCHE Classroom 3 from 7:30-9 p.m. on Jan. 15. The goal of this event is have a space for Asian women residents and medical students to share their experiences working in the medical field and engage with strategies to create positive changes in our communities. We will be centering the conversation around topics of identity, stereotypes, stigma, and mental health. Please RSVP here.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
