Internal Medicine Residency News, Jan. 24th 2022

From the Director

Two “snowmaggedons” down, are we done for the NC winter? Not sure but hopefully so.  Thanks to Felix Nwajei and Komal Safdar for the DUKE IM representation in the snow this weekend.

A few things to take note of….its our LAST RECRUITMENT WEEK! Let’s do this!

For those applying to fellowships in the upcoming fellowship match cycle … Dr Hargett and I will be hosting our “applying to fellowship” intro sessions on Feb 1 and Feb 15 (7pm, zoom link to follow).  The sessions are the same – we will record in case someone’s schedule keeps them from attending.

If you are a PGY-2 and have not yet signed up for Step 3 – now is the time so that your scores are in before PGY-3 contracts are released.

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Ambulatory teams – thinking outside the box

Do you have creative ideas for how to pair up upper-level residents and interns in the clinic environment? If a SAR had free time in the clinic outside of patient care slots to team up with co-residents, what could that look like? Please share ideas with Dani Zipkin as we work toward building a novel clinic team-based experience.

Ambulatory Town Hall feedback

Huge thanks go to Nancy Yang for hosting town halls with all three clinics during morning report to hear your feedback and share with clinic leadership. Together with the continuity clinic survey in October, this is our biggest source of information. As always, if you have more ideas to share, please talk to your clinic leads!

Clinic templates

We are constantly working behind the scenes to bring new opportunities for learning during ambulatory rotations. The Threads content will be shifting soon, more on that to come. We are also adding new opportunities in orthopedics and women’s health/STI’s for those GIM themed blocks, as well as addiction medicine.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
