Internal Medicine Residency News, Jan. 8, 2018

From the Director

It’s finally getting warmer! Thanks to all for keeping the fires burning here while it was bitterly cold outside, helping us deal with the burst pipes, and generally just doing great work during the holiday weeks and into the new year.

We are excited to start radiology rounds on Duke Gen Med this week, with 4th year radiology residents up on the 8th floor ready to review key studies with the gen med teams.  Many thanks to Radiology PD Karen Goldstein and Radiology senior Vishwan Pamarthi as well as our very own Jason Zhu for setting this up!

On behalf of the entire program we would like to thank Matt Crowley for his amazing leadership as the head of the Kempner Society and welcome Juliessa Pavon (former DRH/Amb chief and current Geriatrics Faculty) as the new head of Kempner Society.  Matt was an instrumental force in starting the Stead Tread and a fantastic leader, and we look forward to his continued involvement. Juliessa, we know you will continue the excellence of the Kempner Society!

Kudos

Kudos this week to Talisha Ramchal for an outstanding chair’s conference, to Hannah Dzmictrowicz and Hari Ramalingam from Dr Colby Feeney (and me too!) for their excellent care of patients on Duke Gen Med over the holidays, to Josh P. Lee and Nick Kamp from Brian Golubski and Marge DeOliviera for fantastic leadership in the CCU, and to Ashley Hanlon from Tanya Aylward for helping out with a late VA MICU admission.

Many congratulations to Sam and Lauren Lindner (and big bro Jack) on the birth of Audrey Lindner! We can’t wait to meet her. Everyone is doing well!

Hi DOC!

Happy New year! Today we have just 2 items:

  2. A reminder that if asked to write a letter, complete forms, receive a unpleasant MyChart message from a pt, called by an attorney or the police, or any unusual request, etc., let me know! Call cell, email, page thru cell, etc.! I will help you! My cell is 774-991-0041.

Thank you all for what you do for the DOC!

Narrative Medicine

It is time to get pumped for our next Narrative Medicine meeting coming up on Jan. 19! Our first few sessions with Dr. Pisetsky have been incredible, and we are so excited to have Dinushika to precept our next meeting! The prompt will be to write a story from the perspective of one of your patients. This will be a great time to flex our creativity and reflect on the experiences that our patients have. If you are interested in joining us, please send Matthew Labriola an e-mail so we know how many to expect and can plan out  how many narratives can be discussed. We usually meet around 6:30 p.m. and wrap up by 8:30-9 p.m. depending on the numbers. We are limited to 10 participants.

Check out The Scope

The Scope is a weekly newsletter that goes out on Fridays and summarizes the best evidence-based medical research from the week in a few fun and easy-to-read sentences.
