From the Director
It’s the Chiefs last week!! New interns come to orientation in ONE WEEK. What a fantastic year. We are so proud of our graduating class – please don’t forget to come to the SAR appreciation lunch on Thursday! This is such an exciting and bittersweet time of the year – thank you once again to the Class of 2019 for the incredible contributions you made to the DukeFamily; you are legends!!
Kudos
Kudos this week go to Appleseed Teaching Award Winners: Interns Nicholas Ashur, Sara Coles, David Elliot, Nathaniel Harris, and Trent Wei; JARs Kyle Geurink, Syed Hussaini, and Kathleen Pollard; SARs Hannah Dzimitrowicz, Michael Grant, Matthew Labriola, Michael Murn, and Shannon Niedermeyer; and Medicine-Pediatrics Govind Krishnan and Ashley Naughton. More kudos to Tsion Aberra for a great chair’s conference (and to Mai Bedair for nailing the diagnosis), to Jasmine Washington for her outstanding SAR talk, to Nick Kamp for being supremely helpful to the NF team on Friday night, to Tessa Genders from Paresah Roomiany (our DRH Teaching Award winner!) and the 5-3 nursing staff at DRH for her above and beyond help for an ill patient, from Katie Giarra to Cassie Lautredou for being an absolute joy to work with while setting a stellar example for how to be an empathic doctor on pulm, and to Ahmad Mourad for staying late to help out after getting pulled, to Josh Lee from neuro resident Eric Gutgluek for his expertise in running a code at the VA, and to Matt Labriola from EM resident Dr. Shawna Foley for his fantastic attitude and work ethic in the ED.
Huge congratulations to DRH/Amb Chief Winn Seay on his outstanding Grand Rounds.
Also congratulations to Qasim Hussaini and Shareena Rahman on their wedding!!
PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Matt Tucker for his article "Pembrolizumab in Men with Heavily Treated Metastatic Castrate Resistant Prostate Cancer" in Cancer Medicine.
Please mark your calendars for the final Chief’s Grand Rounds of the year: Jenny Van Kirk on Friday, June 21!
Have a great week!

Overhead construction update: The current situation is that we need to vacate exam rooms by 4:30 daily. If your visit will not be done by then, please contact us/the nurses to figure out a plan to find another space to finish up your visit nearby.
Thanks everybody for your efforts with the rollout of the VA’s national MISSION Act. This will affect how we all enter outpatient consult requests. It’s really important that you speak with your LEAD resident, attendings, or one of us about this so you know what you need to do.
We’re eagerly anticipating our interns’ arrival for clinic orientation on June 27. If you happen upon us leading a merry band around the hospital, please say hi and reassure the newbies that all will be well!
PRIME Clinic is sad to see our SARs graduate, but we are very happy for each of you as you enter the next phase of your professional life! Thanks for all you have done for our veterans and for our clinic. We really appreciate each of you for the wonderful people that you are. It’s been our privilege to partner with you in your training.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
