Internal Medicine Residency News, March 19, 2018

From the Director

Greetings from the Program Director’s meeting in San Antonio! We have a great Duke showing here, with Dr. Rogers, Cathy Wood, Dani Zipkin, Saumil Chudgar, Joel Boggan, Jane Trinh, Diana McNeill, future chiefs Jenny Van Kirk, Kara Wegermann and Winn Seay! We all had the chance to have dinner with Lish Clark!  Saumil, Dani, Diana and Jane have seminars today to present – Go DUKE!

Congratulations again to our new interns! We are really excited to have them join us, and celebrated ourselves with a fun night at Fullsteam on Friday.  Many thanks to all for helping with a fantastic recruitment season.  Baby Noa Boyd even made an appearance!

Please see the emails from Corey Bradley and Hannah Dzmictrowicz for opportunities to help out with the Charity Auction on April 20!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Dan Maselli from Francis Ugowe and the VA teams for being a fantastic teacher on dayfloat (and supplying the teams with fresh eggs!), and to Bryan Golubski from Dennis Narcisse for being true DukeFamily and helping out with the Narcisse’s new puppy, and to Todd Brophy for a great chair’s conference with Anthony Horton getting the diagnosis!

Congratulations are in order to Brian Wasserman and Christine Bates for their engagement, as well to AJ Blood and Coco Fraiche on their engagement!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Shannon Niedermeyer for her abstract accepted to the American Thoracic Society Meeting “Bypassing the Stent Trial in Tracheobronchomalacia.”

Have a great week!

Aimee

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Sonal Patel and Leigh Wynkoop

Please look at our new white boards mounted in the precepting room. We will post important clinic/medical updates there – please eyeball this every time you’re here.

You should discuss the shingles vaccination with patients, if reminder is active. Unclear when we will be getting Shingrix (90-97% effective vs. Zostavax 50% - Shingrix is a 2 shot series, inactivated vaccine). If patient is due for zoster vaccine, “We can give you one now which works about 50% but soon we will be getting a much better one which is 90-97% effective, two shots – if you get the Zostavax today you’ll still be recommended to get the new two-shot vaccine [after at least 8 weeks have passed] – you can choose to just wait for the new vaccine to arrive but I can’t guarantee you that you won’t get shingles before then…. What do you want to do?”  DOCUMENT that you had this discussion and patient chose to get Zostavax OR patient declined Zostavax, choosing to wait for Shingrix. See this if you want more data: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd/shingles/hcp/shingrix/about-vaccine.html

Meanwhile, fabulous job on our HEDIS reminders and on our Pap QI project which Maggie spearheaded during LEAD week!! You can admire our beautiful performance measures on the hall bulletin board. We’ve got some other things cooking from LEAD projects too.

Liz Dyer, LPNWelcome to new PRIME LPN Liz Dyer, who recently moved here from Bath, N.Y., where she worked in the VA in primary care. Liz is an Army Veteran herself. We are thrilled to have her working in PRIME.

Thank you all for the terrific work you do caring for our Veterans.
