Clinic Corner: PRIME

You should discuss the shingles vaccination with patients, if reminder is active. Unclear when we will be getting Shingrix (90-97% effective vs. Zostavax 50% - Shingrix is a 2 shot series, inactivated vaccine). If patient is due for zoster vaccine, “We can give you one now which works about 50% but soon we will be getting a much better one which is 90-97% effective, two shots – if you get the Zostavax today you’ll still be recommended to get the new two-shot vaccine [after at least 8 weeks have passed] – you can choose to just wait for the new vaccine to arrive but I can’t guarantee you that you won’t get shingles before then…. What do you want to do?”  DOCUMENT that you had this discussion and patient chose to get Zostavax OR patient declined Zostavax, choosing to wait for Shingrix. Meanwhile, fabulous job on our HEDIS reminders and on our Pap QI project which Maggie spearheaded during LEAD week!! You can admire our beautiful performance measures on the hall bulletin board. We’ve got some other things cooking from LEAD projects too.

Welcome to new PRIME LPN Liz Dyer, who recently moved here from Bath, N.Y., where she worked in the VA in primary care. Liz is an Army Veteran herself. We are thrilled to have her working in PRIME.

Program for Women in Internal Medicine Social Event
The Program for Women in Internal Medicine (PWIM) will host a social even on Thursday, March 29, from 4-7 p.m., at the University Club (3100 Tower Blvd, 17th floor). Resident Wellness Initiative Grants
Resident Wellness Initiative Grants for resident-led, innovative projects are dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents, which is of utmost importance to our Program. 

The proposed initiatives may be designed to promote resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded
2. Funding start date is July 1, 2018
3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2018-2019 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2019
4. Teamwork is encouraged to include rising JARs and incoming interns. Multiple SARs may lead one project
5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required
6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2018 for review by an award selection committee
8. Applications forms are attached.

Califf Medicine Resident Research Award
The annual Califf Medicine Resident Research Award competition abstracts are due on April 30, 2018.Awards presentation will take place on May 18, 2018 between 7-9 a.m. in Searle Center Lecture Hall.

Abstracts (300 word) and supporting mentor's letter are due on April 30, 2018. All abstracts submitted for competition will also be presented as posters. The top 3 abstracts will be selected by a faculty committee for the Califf Research Awards and these research projects will be presented as 15 minute talks 8-9 a.m.

Two best poster awards will be selected (Research poster and QI poster) by the Chief Residents during the poster viewing session prior to Grand Rounds.

We invite all of you to present your scholarly activities as posters (we can send you poster templates):

1. Basic, clinical, medical education, and translational research projects
2. Case studies / vignettes including ACP posters from 2018
3. QI projects
4. Please plan on presenting your posters posters that you have presented previously at a national scientific meeting

To discuss any issues related to the application process or once you have decided to submit an abstract, please e-mail murat.arcasoy@duke.edu to declare your intention to submit, your research mentor's name and the title of your poster.  Please contact the MedRes office staff (Ms. Tia Williams) for assistance with the poster preparation process.

GIM Resident Research Award
The Division of General Internal Medicine is pleased to announce the first annual GIM Resident Research Award! Please see details below. Applications will be accepted through March 30, 2018.

Eligibility:
Internal Medicine residents (categorical, medicine-pediatrics, medicine-psychiatry)
Research that was initiated during tenure as a resident

Submission Categories:
One award will be given annually. Submissions can be either:
Clinical Research
Quality Improvement

Submissions should be relevant to primary care, general internal medicine, or hospital medicine. Areas of focus can include patient-centered interventions, disparity populations, population management, systems evaluation or re-design, or health care policy.

Submissions should be under 800 words and should include:

• Name of primary investigator and co-investigators
• Name of other faculty mentors involved in the project
• Description of project including objectives, population, methods/intervention, and outcomes if available.
• Discussion of lessons learned, one paragraph
• Attach copies or links to any published abstracts or manuscripts related to the work

Please submit your materials to Robin Byrd, robin.byrd@duke.edu, via email attachment by March 30, 2018. Blinded committee review will take place in April.

The top selected projects will be invited to present their work at a DGIM research meeting in May 2018, to be announced. The winner of the top rated project will receive a $500 honorarium. We look forward to seeing your submissions!

 

Faculty-Resident Research Grant
The applications are due on April 8, 2018 for a funding start date on July 1, 2018.

For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2019. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2020.

Attached please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV)

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor).

Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2018. Please also find attached scholarship opportunity calendar for this academic year 2017-2018

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
