From the Program

Congratulations to everyone on a wonderful Match Day and thanks to all who participated in our Be the Match drive honoring Dave Zaas. Special thanks to Eileen Maziarz for organizing the event, and to all the volunteers who helped Friday morning.

Tonight: Join the DoM Book Club to discuss "Modern Death" by Duke Cardiology Fellow Haider Warraich. We'll meet from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Searle Center Faculty Lounge.

Don't forget: Please send any of your news or kudos for your colleagues to Erin Payne.

Have a great week!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Landon Brown for excellent workup of a patient on night float from Poonam Sharma, to Robert Diep for a great chair's conference and to Anne Weaver for her excellent SAR Talk, to Wynn Seay and Josh Lee for being amazing co-residents and helping out by covering VA cardiology consults last week. And kudos go to the supportive, brilliant, and stunning Micu team-- Jared, Leah, Meg, Megan, and Sarah from Megan Gillum, and to Kahli Zietlow for being an amazing SAR day float at the VA. Kudos to Tessa Genders for making the 8200 workroom a fun and enjoyable place to work. Kudos to our gold star recipients Alison Vasan, Drew DeMaio, Ben Ranard and Kevin Smith.

And big kudos to Madi Smith for her friendship and service to the program. We will miss you!

PubMed from the Program

This week's pubmed from the program goes to Shai Posner and Shai's mentors (Richard Wood, Rahul Shimpi, Matthew Hartwig and David Leiman) for their poster at the Digestive Diseases Week annual meeting in Chicago. Shai's work is entitled: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptom Correlation with Ambulatory pH-Metry and Esophageal High Resolution Manometry in Lung Transplant Candidates.

Staffing updates: Lori White-Johnson has moved away and is transferring to the Greenville, VA. We welcome Cecilia Hamlett, who will be assisting while we look to hire a new LPN for our team. She’s already been working some in PRIME and has years of experience in primary care in the Durham VA. As a reminder, Team 1 MSA is still Medenna Carr; Team 2 is Anthony McCrea; Team 3 is Latasha Alston.

HEDIS: great job everybody on working your HEDIS reminders! HEDIS tracking is used by >90% of American healthcare plans to assess patient care. Remember to clear every HEDIS reminder even if it’s a gap visit. Huge ones to be certain not to miss are positive alcohol, depression, PTSD screens.  Alcohol will now flag as positive only if AUDIT-C score is >= 5 (i.e. less often than before); also will flag if patient has an alcohol-related diagnosis.  We know you talk about tobacco cessation with your patients, but document it via the reminder!

There is now a facility opioid nurse, Florence McDonald. She is working on our NC state database reviews and UDS screens. If you have comp and those items are due, still take care of them. There is now a SEPARATE note to enter for review of the NC state database; you will be given info on this.

COMP time has been modified; you will be given longer to complete it but also to do population management and assist with team paperwork, etc.  Plan to be physically in clinic and working on PRIME-related matters that entire session.

There’s now a pain e-consult with interdisciplinary recommendations from a chart review, generally within one week. To order: Consults, choose Pain Consults, choose DIPC Interdisciplinary Pain Management E-consult.

Our late policy has been modified to 20 minutes from the stated time of the appointment. If your patient arrives after that, the MSA should Lync you to see if you want to see the patient; otherwise the plan is for the RN to triage the patient for acute needs such as med refills (or chest pain!), and the patient will need to reschedule.

Lastly, if you sometimes wonder about why you do what you do, this article might remind you: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2016/10/06/well/live/a-letter-to-the-doctors-and-nurses-who-cared-for-my-wife.html?referer.

The proposed innovative initiatives will promote and preserve Internal Medicine resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded.
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2017.

  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include JARs and incoming interns and multiple SARs may lead one project.
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required.
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.

DoM Book Club

Mark your calendars for a very special book club event on Mon., March 20, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Searle Center Faculty Lounge!  We'll be reading "Modern Death" by Duke's very own Dr. Haider Warraich, who has kindly agreed to attend our event and join us for a lively discussion.  This will be a fantastic event that you don't want to miss!

Copies of Modern Death are available at Barnes and Noble or online.  If you're interested in attending, RSVP to laura.caputo@duke.edu.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

We are pleased to invite you to apply for the 2017 annual “Faculty-Resident Research Grant” applications. The applications are due on April 9, 2017 for a funding start date on July 1, 2017. For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2018. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2019

Please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV).

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor). Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2017. For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.
