From the Director
Sorry to see Duke lose in an “instant classic” yesterday. On the upside, we can now begin planning our annual Faculty vs Resident Basketball game in Cameron Indoor! More to come soon on this great event! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Charity Auction on April 20, as well – Hannah and Corey are doing an amazing job planning and we look forward to seeing you there!
Kudos
Kudos this week go to Shannon Niedermeyer from Petra Brayo for being an amazing VA GM JAR, to Jess Regan for receiving a “Good Catch” patient safety award, to Landon Brown from Kyle Guerink and Keva Garg for his support, teaching and general awesomeness as the CCU teach resident, to Mark Robertshaw from Akash Goyal for being extremely helpful with a sick patient and to Mike Murn for a fantastic chair’s conference. We also enjoyed having the Joseph C. Greenfield Visiting Professor and director of the NCI Dr. Ned Sharpless this past week at Grand Rounds. If you didn’t get a chance to see his talk in person, it is worth the watch from your desk! Watch it here.
PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Nate Moulton for his abstract that was accepted to the American Thoracic Society meeting in San Diego! “Blood transfusion thresholds and outcomes in patients requiring veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for acute respiratory failure,” with mentor Craig Rackley.
Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: Ambulatory
Contributed by Daniella Zipkin
Ambulatory THREADS Model in the works!
Starting in July, interns and JARs will be on 6 month longitudinal ambulatory threads. There are 4 threads in all, so everyone will transition through all four threads:
- The +2 block will include clinics in specific sub-specialities along with continuity clinics, academic half day, and subspecialty clinic if you’ve chosen one based on your fellowship plans.
- In the subspecialty clinics, residents will RETURN to the same clinic approximately six times in a six month period, to give better traction in the experience and better teaching with the attendings you’ll be working with.
- Academic Half Day will be thread specific, so the teaching will match the clinics you have during that year
- Interns will be exposed to EVERY sub-specialty in their first year of training, either inpatient or outpatient, via capturing the things they typically missed into the intern ambulatory threads. This may make career planning easier!
Groupings are:
- Intern Thread A: GI/ID/other VA clinics
- Intern Thread B: Renal/Rheum/Endocrine
- JAR Thread A: Hematology (benign and malignant)/Cardiology
- JAR Thread B: Oncology/Pulm
Please ask Lynsey, Dinushika or Dani for more info or to share suggestions!!
ACLT Preparing for DC!
The ACLT group will head to DC on May 15th to present their platforms to legislators. They will be dividing into two groups to discuss issues in drug pricing as well as the opioid epidemic.
Continuity Clinic Survey coming soon, April 23!
Please fill out the very brief survey on your continuity clinic experience when you see it in April, it helps us tremendously in evaluating and improving the clinics.
