From the Program

We had another great week! Thanks to Manisha Bhattacharya and Laura Caputo for organizing the DoM Book Club session last week.

Congratulations to Ryan and Kelly Orgel on the birth of Aiden James Orgel.

Don't forget: Please send any of your news or kudos for your colleagues to Erin Payne.

Have a great week!

Kudos

Kudos this week go to CoCo Fraiche for going above and beyond for a patient, and to Lara Kapp, who saw a patient at the DOC when she was there for admin time, from Lynn Bowlby. Kudos to Jenny Van Kirk for a great SAR Lecture and to Rachel Feder for an interesting chair's conference. Kudos to Brittany Gatta from Tia Williams for her immaculate travel reimbursement submission. We will certainly be using it as a sample for her colleagues!

PubMed from the Program

This week's pubmed from the program goes to Landon Brown for "The Evolving Role of Rituximab in Adult Minimal Change Glomerulopathy" in the American Journal of Nephrology.

Schedule Updates

The chiefs and the residency office are on track to have nearly the ENTIRE year of continuity clinics planned out before June. Imagine how much easier it will be to maintain continuity with YOUR own patients when you can look ahead to your actual clinic days to see them back! When you have the chance, please thank Emily, Lynsey, Jen, and the Chiefs for making this possible!

Evaluations

And, while I’m on the topic of continuity clinics, please select all of the attendings you had significant interactions with at your clinics (we know this is toughest at Prime and DOC), every week that you are there. This can be in response to the MedHub prompt or can be done on your own as well, assign as many as you’d like. This will help us get a sufficient number from the clinics and avoid the twice yearly “scramble” the clinics tend to end up in – THANKS!!!

Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting, April 19-22

We are thrilled by the level of academic work and career interest in general internal medicine these days, and we have a record number of residents whose work will be presented at this year’s SGIM meeting. Congratulations to this crew (in alphabetical order)!!

We are pleased to announce a new funding opportunity entitled “Resident Wellness Initiative Grants” for resident-led, innovative projects dedicated to promote the well-being of our residents which is of utmost importance to our Program and Duke family.

The proposed innovative initiatives will promote and preserve Internal Medicine resident physician wellness by building skills to handle the challenges and the pace of the current healthcare environment, while continuing to provide quality care to patients.

  1. Two awards each $2,500/project will be funded.
  2. Funding start date is July 1, 2017.
  3. Each proposal must be led by one or more SARs (current JARs) during the 2017-2018 academic year. Extension of funding may be requested next year beyond June 30, 2018.
  4. Teamwork is encouraged to include JARs and incoming interns and multiple SARs may lead one project.
  5. Faculty sponsor/advisor may be recruited but not required.
  6. Additional funding for a larger award may be available depending on the level of interest and budgets of the project(s). The award committee will review and make a decision on each proposal.
  7. The 2-page proposals are due on June 1, 2017 for review by an award selection committee.
  8. Applications forms are attached.

For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

We are pleased to invite you to apply for the 2017 annual “Faculty-Resident Research Grant” applications. The applications are due on April 9, 2017 for a funding start date on July 1, 2017. For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2018. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2019

Please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV).

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor). Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

The next opportunity to apply for a research grant will be in September 2017. For any questions, please contact murat.arcasoy@duke.edu.
