Kudos

Kudos this week go to Christine Bates for going above and beyond to help the CCU resident with Cardiology consults, to Brittany Gatta for excellent care of a patient on 7300, to Juan Sanchez, who did a great job taking care of his patients and educating the team (including the attending!) by following up most days with a recap with a few relevant articles for perusal. Additional kudos to Drs. Juan Sanchez, E-beth Ockerman and Jim Isaacs for doing a great job smiling and humoring the attending by taking the stairs. Kudos to Matthew Tucker from Aaron Loochtan for excellent patient care on Neuro. Additional kudos to Matt Tucker on the way he handled a very difficult situation. Kudos to Kully Woodruff for amazing above-and-beyond care of one of her primary patients from Suchita Shah Sata, to Stephen Kimani for excellent Chairs conference and David Kopin for excellent SAR talk, to Nicole Helmke for an amazing CAT (critically appraised topic).

Kudos to all the JARS and SARS who made intern day off possible by helping with coverage, and kudos to Zach Il'Giovine and Philip Liu for covering the interns the night before Intern Day Off. 

And Kudos from John Lawrence in an update related to the Eldoret Strike: “We all should commend our three Duke residents who have been here during this time period, Pascale Khairallah, Tim Hinohara, and Jake Feigal. This is a stellar group... they know how to work hard, how to remain steady during  turmoil, how to always remain kind to needful patients and staff, and how to remain interested and alert and be 'scientifically minded' in dealing with complex medical challenges, AND I have never heard a single one of them complain. I feel very proud to be associated with them.”

PubMed from the Program

This week's pubmed from the program goes to Leah Machen for the acceptance of her abstract for presentation at the upcoming Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) annual meeting. Leah's abstract is entitled, "Racial variations in medical care spending patterns among high-risk primary care patients: results from the STOP-DKD Study." The STOP-DKD study is an ongoing randomized controlled trial of active Duke Primary Care patients with diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease, designed to examine the effect of a multifactorial telehealth intervention on health outcomes.

Califf Medicine Resident Research Award Competition

The annual Califf Medicine Resident Research Award competition abstracts are due on April 10, 2017.

Awards presentation will take place on May 4, 2017 between 5-7 p.m. in Searle Center Lecture Hall. Abstracts (300 words) and supporting mentor's letter are due on April 10, 2017. Please see attached abstract preparation instructions. All abstracts submitted for competition will also be presented as posters.

The top 3 abstracts will be selected by a faculty committee for the Califf Research Awards and these research projects will be presented as 15 minute talks 6 pm – 7 p.m. Two best poster awards will be selected (Research poster and QI poster) by the Chief Residents during the poster viewing session prior to Grand Rounds.

We invite all of you to present your scholarly activities as posters (we can send you poster templates):

  1. Basic, clinical and translational research projects
  2. Case studies / vignettes including ACP posters from 2017
  3. QI projects
  4. Please plan on presenting your posters posters that you have presented previously at a national scientific meeting

To discuss any issues related to the application process or once you have decided to submit an abstract, please e-mail murat.arcasoy@duke.edu to declare your intention to submit, your research mentor's name and the title of your poster.  Please contact the MedRes office staff (Ms. Tia Williams) for assistance with the poster preparation process.

 
DoM Book Club

Mark your calendars for a very special book club event on Mon., March 20, from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Searle Center Faculty Lounge!  We'll be reading "Modern Death" by Duke's very own Dr. Haider Warraich, who has kindly agreed to attend our event and join us for a lively discussion.  This will be a fantastic event that you don't want to miss!

Faculty-Resident Research Grant

We are pleased to invite you to apply for the 2017 annual “Faculty-Resident Research Grant” applications. The applications are due on April 9, 2017 for a funding start date on July 1, 2017. For JARs, the funding end date is June 30, 2018. For Interns, the funding end date is June 30, 2019

Please find the application forms, instructions, and sample NIH format biosketch (the old NIH Bioskecth format forms are acceptable for your CV).

Please submit your application as a single word or pdf file that includes your mentor’s NIH Biosketch (the new versus old NIH Biosketch format is optional for your mentor). Please email a pdf file of the signed mentor's support letter with your application by April 9, either as part of the entire application or separately.

Each proposal must have a Human subjects section that describes the protections of the patients and patient data, describe the consent procedure if applicable, status of IRB protocol (to be submitted, already submitted or already approved, as appropriate) etc. This section is required whether to not your project is a retrospective or prospective study, whether patient identifiers are exposed (or not) during data collection/analysis, whether consent is to be obtained or there is a waiver for consent. Please see attached example language that you can adapt to your own specific protocol after discussing with your research mentor.

BLS Blitz

For any trainee whose BLS will expire between 3/13/2017 and 11/1/2017

The BLS Blitz is an opportunity for house staff to renew their American Heart Association (AHA) BLS provider certification at no cost.  Classes will run March 13, 2017 to March 17, 2017. Registration is open now and all trainees’ whose certification will expire between 3/31/2017 and 11/01/2017 are encouraged to participate. There will be no other BLS classes given at Duke until November 2017.  If you miss this Duke provided session and need BLS certification, at a cost to you, you may make arrangements with an outside AHA provider. We recommend CPR Consultants (919-850-9295) or Triangle CPR (919-851-4380).

  • Log into the Duke LMS at https://lms.duhs.duke.edu/Saba/Web/Cloudusing your NetID and Password.
  • In the Learning Catalog Search box, enter BLS30101 (or Basic Life Support) and click Search.
  • Locate the desired class to attend and click Register.
Facts to Remember
  • All classes will be held in Hock Plaza, Suite G07 and will be three hours long.
  • Participants must review and have a current AHA BLS Provider Manual 2015 in hand for class.
  • A Duke ID badge must be brought to the session.
  • The class will involve physical activity, so please dress accordingly.
  • Employees are expected to park in their designated area and walk or ride the van to Hock.
  • Questions can be directed to Clinical Education and Professional Development (684-4293).

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
