From the Director

What a beautiful weekend. I hope that you got some good Turkey Bowl practices in on the beautiful but cold fall weekend. If you aren’t playing football, I hope you did have a chance to be outside and enjoy the sunshine. While Veteran’s Day was Sunday, we are very much looking forward to our Veteran’s Day noon conference later this month. Many thanks to Chris Hostler for organizing this so that we can all learn more.

Many thanks to all who helped out with recruitment this week – an awesome afternoon report by Joe Plaksin, a fantastic chair’s conference by Sheila Sherzoy (with Ahmad Mourad getting the diagnosis), excellent My Takes by Sam Dizon, Bhavik Patel, Joe Lerman, Irena Tan, Cindy Pabon, Jess Regan, Kyle Geurink, Daniel Turner, and Marius Chukwurah, as well as tours by Brittany Gatta, Jeremy Brooksbank, Daniel Turner, Shaki Salvador, and Godefroy Chery.

Kudos

Kudos this week go to Shaki Salvador for outstanding care of a patient at the DOC from Francis Ugowe, to Nate Moulton for a great handoff of a very sick patient  from the VA ED (also from Francis!), to Anthony Horton from Grace Lee for being a fantastic JAR at the VA (also check out the picture of Tannay and Grace “having each other’s back” as co-interns at the VA!), to Jasmine Washington from Shaki Salvador for her excellent work as the DOC lead and being a great team player, to Nicole Pristera for her dedication on Duke Gen Med in staying late to ensure a complex discharge went smoothly (from Akash Goyal), to Lindsey Shantzer from Priyesh Patel for going above and beyond in contacting a patient’s outpatient team to ensure continuity of care, and to Irena Tan for an outstanding SAR talk!

Lots of DukeFamily meeting up at the various conferences and professional meetings taking place this past weekend! Duke IM alums Angela Lowenstern and Sajal Tanna hung out in Chicago, and 2018 grads Ashley Spann, Megan Gillum, Sarah Nouri and David Sterken met up in SF!

Clinic Corner: Pickett Road

Pickett Road is excited to welcome Adam Scher, who recently started as our new nurse manager. We also are excited that Karen Nielsen has accepted a newly created population health nurse role to help manage our patient population outside of traditional office visits. Congratulations to Dr. David Halpern, who supervises residents on Wednesday mornings, on his recent appointment to Medical Director of Quality for the Duke Primary Care network. Our staff enjoyed another successful chili cook-off on Halloween; congrats to Dr. Cecily Peterson, who won for the second year in a row.

From the Residency Office

PWIM "Before They Were Stars"
Join us for an evening with Dr. Kathy Cooney. This event is a casual Q&A format about career and personal paths and successes. It is open to all residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine. It will be Tues., Nov. 13 from 6-8:30 p.m. in the Med Res library (Duke North 8253).

Narrative Medicine
The next narrative medicine session will be held on Fri., Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Med Res! We are incredibly lucky to have Dr. G (or Dr. Anthony Galanos, to be formal about it) to precept our next meeting! Our prompt this session will be "Uncertainty." By choosing this theme, we hope to inspire you to think about the often morally grey, emotionally confusing, and intellectual no-man's land that we have to navigate, and we hope the broad nature of this theme allows you to be as creative as you would like. Of note, we are planning on collaborating with the Voices of Medicine group to potentially publish pieces based on this theme in their upcoming Spring publication, which may even lead to a multidisciplinary collaboration in the future! If you are interested in joining us, please send Irena Tan an email so we know how many to expect and can plan out how many narratives can be discussed. Dinner/drinks will be provided. To ensure a safe and intimate space, we are limited to ~12 participants so make sure to grab a spot!

Research Opportunities
The deadline for submitting an abstract for the NC Chapter of ACP is Dec. 15, 2018. The meeting will be held in Raleigh, Feb. 22-23, 2019. Scholarly activity can be in clinical research, basic research, clinical vignette, quality improvement and high value care. Learn more.

Duke Department of Medicine is accepting applications for the R38 Research Pathway for categorical internal medicine residents committed to a career as a physician-investigator in academic medicine. Applications are due Dec. 10, 2018. See details in email.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
