From the Director

Gearing up for the big game on Thursday! Super excited to enjoy the Turkey Bowl on Thursday – whether you are playing or watching, we hope to see you and your families there for this weekend warrior #dukefamily tradition. Also please send me your Friendsgiving photos!

Other things to be on the lookout for – signing up for semi-annual evaluations (thanks to all who have already signed up), doing a quick check of your procedure logs (especially SARs), beginning to think about your plans for next year (Clin Epi? Ultrasound Course? ACLT? etc.) as schedule request forms will be coming out in December, and boards study plans for SARs. We are looking forward to working with each of you to help you figure out all of these important aspects of training. We also are looking forward to celebrating fellowship match with our SARs on Dec. 4!  Location TBD by our SAR class.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Matt Carlisle for his great resident report with applicants and to Cameron Oswalt for an awesome Chair’s Conference. Participation was awesome as well! More kudos from Cindy Pabon to Ryan Slauer for his amazing work on VA cardiology consults this past week! He handled the service gracefully and efficiently all on his own (with an attending too, of course). Super impressive! Also kudos and thanks to our My Take team of Hayley Cunningham, Alex Reddy, Sonali Bracken, Aaron Hein, Bhavik Patel and Nancy Yang, and our tour guides Nick Kamp, Nick Koutlas, Sheila Sherzoy, Tanmay Gokhale, Madhu Eluri, and Nancy Yang.

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to our chief Caroline Sloan for her CJASN paper and to Anish Badjatiya for his Circulation:Cardiovascular Interventions paper Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Peripheral Artery Disease Results From the EXSCEL Trial. Anish Badjatiya, MD; Peter Merrill, PhD; John B. Buse, MD, PhD; Shaun G. Goodman, MD, MSc; Brian Katona, PharmD; Nayyar Iqbal, MD; Neha J. Pagidipati, MD, MPH; Naveed Sattar, MBChB, PhD; Rury R. Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track (ACLT) Applications OPEN!
Founded in 2012, the ACLT is an elective track for second and third year residents which focuses on advocacy, leadership, and education. Residents come together during twelve weeks per year during ambulatory clinical time, with weekly academic seminars on Friday afternoons. The curriculum includes:

  • Advocacy and health policy seminars given by faculty in government relations and health policy throughout the year, with an advocacy trip in the spring to either Washington DC or Raleigh, NC, alternating years. Residents create a platform based on issues they wish to address as a group and meet directly with lawmakers at the state and national level to present their views.
  • Seminars in leadership and career planning
  • Seminars in teaching skills and opportunities for small group teaching as a senior resident, with direct observation and feedback
  • Each block also includes General Internal Medicine Journal Club, presented by residents with support from EBM teaching faculty.

Current ACLT residents are:
SARs – Keva Garg, Alie Mara, Katie Pollard, Tamara Saint-Surin, Anmol Singh, Alex Sullivan, Nancy Yang
Med Psych –Nicole Helmke, Johnny Komisar, Colin Smith, Alyssa Stavig
JARs – Marius Chukwurah, John Davy, Nathaniel Harris, Cassie Lautredou, Soo Lim, Ahmad Mourad, Cindy Pabon, Bhavik Patel, Maggie Salinger

The brief applications are now live, sent via email, and due on January 10. Please email Dani Zipkin with any questions!

Please PEND your orders until you sign out in clinic – Reminder!
The health system made systematic changes to lab and order routing for all trainees at Duke. This has ramifications for workflow in clinic, particularly at DOC. For those who haven’t heard yet:

  1. Upon signing in to your workstation in the beginning, DO NOT select an attending, leave it blank
  2. Within each encounter, PEND all orders until you know who you are signing out with. This is critical. In the past, the name you put in that field didn’t matter, since lab results did not get copied to anyone, and other results routed to a default attending designated at the front desk on check in. No longer!! The attending you put in AT THE TIME OF SIGNING ORDERS will be the attending copied on all of the results.
  3. This is true for POC orders, and all orders (because the attending designation prompt only appears ONCE per encounter) . Luckily, at the DOC, nurses are now doing POC glucose and POC A1c without our order, per protocol. But other POC orders will need to wait until you sign out. You can sign these selectively, first, as soon as you start signing out, to get things moving! (Selective sign is tiny, locate in the lowest right hand arrow, to the right of signing orders… try it!!)
