From the Director
Happy week after Thanksgiving! We are charging ahead into December – looking forward to our Zoom holiday event on Dec. 12! You think we would let the chiefs get away with no performance just because we are gathering virtually? NO WAY! Actually, your amazing chiefs are way excited to entertain. Because there is literally NOTHING that they aren’t great at. (My English teachers are cringing at everything wrong with that sentence…but yes the chiefs are awesome).
A HUGE THANKSGIVING THANKS TO DR. COONEY and the DOM for Thanksgiving lunch for our residents and fellows!
Many thanks to all for your continued efforts at staying COVID-safe. Nothing easy about any of this for us or for our patients and community. Your efforts are truly appreciated and make a difference each time we all make a safer choice in what we do. Please keep us informed if you are in need of cleaning supplies, safer work spaces, or new “forever face shields”!

From the Residency Office
Duke SCI-StARR Pathway
The Duke SCI-StARR pathway (Science Clinician Investigator - Stimulating Access to Research in Residency) supports protected time funded by an R38 award for research for residents in the Departments of Medicine who are committed to a career as a physician investigator in academic medicine. All Residents in the R38 SCI-StARR program will have a primary research mentor in either laboratory-based basic science research or clinical research. In addition, a Scholarship Oversight Committee (SOC) will meet with each resident in the program at least twice per year and help the trainee create an individualized development plan. Application Deadline: Nov. 30, 2020.
Duke Primary Care Transformation Fellowship
The Duke Department of Family Medicine and Community Health is accepting applications to fill the third cohort of its two-year Primary Care Transformation Fellowship. The goal of the fellowship is to train physicians and physician assistants to lead health care transformation and improve health within their communities and community-based practice settings. Applications are due Jan. 31, 2021. Learn more.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources.
