Internal Medicine Residency News, Nov. 6, 2017

From the Director

We are well into the interview season! Crazy how fast time is flying. I hear that the Turkey Bowl practices are taking on new levels of seriousness, and we are psyched to be entering this part of the year.

Many thanks to those who “took one for the team” and were on call or nights during the Fall Back Daylight Savings Time change! It is now your badge of honor to let people know that you got to spend that extra hour here!

Kudos

Kudos this week to Anmol Singh from Joe Lerman for spending several extra hours of her time advocating to an insurance company for her patient to get a lifesaving medication, to Chris Ferreri from Duke prelim alum and current neuro resident Maggie Kilgore for his outstanding care and compassion on the neurology service, to Emily Kinsey from Dinushika for her dedication to the many learners at DRH, for her fantastic reviews and innovative physical exam teaching strategies, and for creating some great new cases for Ambulatory report. Emily is always, as we know, someone who can be counted on to handle business and rise to my occasion. Ashley Spann, our night 9100 resident, adds her kudos to the entire 9100 team of interns - Diana Mosquera (for being such a champ on nights and taking great care of some pretty sick overnight admissions), Anmol Singh (for taking the extra time to ensure a patient got the medication he needed on a late weekend day before discharge), and Joe Lerman and Jessica Regan for being generally awesome team players!  Kudos to Mimi Xu for stepping in to be a great colleague to co-intern Melodi Whitley – Mimi came in early to get Melodi home so she could take her son trick-or-treating! Thank you Mimi for representing what is our amazing #dukefamily.

Additional kudos to Filley Howe for her fantastic chair’s conference for applicants, and to Mike Noujiam, Kent Feng and Megan Dupuis for “My Take” and to our tour guides as well.  And thanks to everyone who chatted with the applicants at lunch! Lots more opportunities this week to meet the future Duke residents!

Reminders to the SARs who are applying for fellowships to contact me if you have questions or need to follow up, and to be sure you are registered for the NRMP!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Wynn Hunter for his recent editorial in Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Heart Failure with mentor Svati Shah! "Realizing the Potential of Metabolomics in Heart Failure: Signposts on the Path to Clinical Utility."

Have a great week!

Aimee
