From the Director

Hey everyone! How did it happen that we already have frost on the ground?!? We are moving quickly through the first round of recruitment and steadily towards Turkey Bowl, the fellowship match and the holidays. Reminder to meet with your advisor before the holiday break if you have not already done so this fall—they want to discuss your ILP, how the first half of the year has gone, how you are doing, and your goals for the next half of the year. We will be sending reminders to advisors and to you so be on the lookout!

The “Meet Your Coach” happy hour was FANTASTIC! Great turnout by many faculty and residents, and it was really cool to sit back and watch the interactions between the coaching pairings. Meetings can start up anytime and you will be hearing from Karen and I on a regular basis so we can keep track of who has met and send reminders as necessary.

Kudos

We had a pretty awesome noon conference this week with our “cases for the experts” series! Thanks to Pascale Khairallah and Adam Banks for presenting and to our panel of Harvey Cohen, Chet Patel, Tim Scialla and Tom Holland for being on the “hot seat” to go through the cases.  Also kudos to Leah Machen for a great chair’s conference.

Thanks for another great recruiting week, and especially to our tour guides Robert Diep, Rachel Feder, Ani Kumar, Pascale Khairallah, and Christine Bates, as well to our “My Take” teams of Matt Labriola, Brian Wasserman, Christine Bates, Daniel Turner, Sky Vanderburg, Kara Wegermann and Zach Wegermann. Also thanks to our awesome faculty speakers Susanna Naggie and Manesh Patel. We really appreciate you all!

Other kudos this week to Michael Murn from Neeru Metta for outstanding patient-centered care on 9300, to our gen med teams and MICU teams for hosting applicants on rounds…to Elieth Martinez for an outstanding “recruitment” PM report, and to Julia Xu from Dani Zipkin for really good clinic notes…and to Kavisha Singh from Kahli Zeitlow "for being incredibly helpful during a very busy night at the VA MICU."

PubMed from the Program

This week goes to Kara Wegermann who presented her poster BCAT1 is Associated with Clinical Decompensation in NAFLD: A Pilot Study at the AASLD meeting, with co-authors Ricardo Henao, Manal Abdelmalek, Anna Mae Diehl and Cynthia Moylan.

We Care Week

Our apologies for the delay in this very exciting news. I’m thrilled to announce that your vote selected the Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation for this year's We Care Week donation! The funds raised will be donated to the foundation in support of the amazing work they do to eradicate suicide by funding depression research, creating awareness through education, erasing the stigma, and providing hope to those who are struggling in silence.

Our own Stephanie Garbarino shared the following:

“This non-profit was started after my best friend took her own life at the end of college at the University of Michigan, her name was Jordan. Jordan was bright, beautiful, and brilliant... She (like many residents) was a valedictorian and a highly driven and motivated individual who valued public service and giving back to the community above anything else. Suicide is an epidemic in this country and I'm afraid as a clinician now myself I feel like I still do a pretty poor job addressing and adequately treating depression and suicide with my own patients! The JEH foundation donates almost $100,000 to depression and suicide research annually, and fund positions for young adult outreach and crisis intervention training. Their ultimate mission revolves around "bringing the conversation to light" and stopping the stigma around mental illness and suicide.”

Thank you again for your involvement & ALL the ways you care for so many on a daily basis!

Have a great week!
