Internal Medicine Residency News, Oct. 11th, 2021

From the Director

Fun filled DOCTOBERFEST continues! Thanks to our  amazing barista chiefs for catering the homemade PSLs to the teams! This week we are making hot chocolate and hot apple cider for the night teams – can’t wait! All part of the carb loading for the upcoming STEAD TREAD! Let’s keep the signups going.

Kudos
Kudos this week to Karina Mora Massad for an awesome SAR talk, to JT Tanaka for his excellent Cohen Conference, to our former chiefs Matt Labriola and Hannah Dzimitrowicz for their Grand Rounds presentation, and to the NF crew of Emory Buck, Kelly Flynn, Matt Goodwin and Chris Wanjiku from Priyanka Reddy for being generally just an awesome bunch of co-workers.   Clearly the THANK-Rx_ATHON is working so thanks to all who are sending this version on kudos and tacos to their colleagues!

Congratulations to Kristin Corey on her wedding!!!

It’s that time of year for advising meetings, so please check in with your advisor if you haven’t met this year yet!  Dr Mitchell has sent a quick survey to the JARs to check on research/scholarly work mentorship, so we appreciate hearing from you about how things are going in that arena as well.  SARs, please let Bill or me know if you have questions now that you are wrapping up those many fellowship interviews.

Kayla will be asking you about signing up for pre-interview virtual meet ups, my takes, and willingness to have invited “future Duke residents” reach out to you… be on the lookout for ways to help bring in the next class of amazing #Dukefam

Pubmed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Chris Wanjiku, Kirstin Binz and Bari Rosenberg for their poster accepted to the upcoming American Society of Hematology meeting with mentor Dr. Tom LeBlanc, Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Western Kenya: A Snapshot.

Have a great week and see ya at the STEAD TREAD!

Clinic Corner: Pickett

Contributed by Jeff Clough

We are happy to have Dr. Fatima Syed selected as one of the inaugural Vice Chiefs for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and we look forward to having her as a resource at Pickett.  Dr. Bruce Peyser was recently selected as the Chair of the Clinician-Teacher Branch for the Department of Medicine Faculty Development Academy, where he will lead efforts to mentor and guide clinician educators.  Of course both will continue in their roles as stellar preceptors at Pickett Road.

2021 Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
You are invited to sign up to participate in the annual Stead Tread 5K fun run/walk on Saturday October 16th at 9:00 AM on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham.

We will start and finish the race at Solite Park and will have an award ceremony and hang out afterward. 100% of the proceeds from this race benefit Lincoln Clinic, which provides health care to the medically underserved population of Durham. Lincoln has been a huge asset to Durham for decades, but especially over this past year. So, I hope we can pitch in to raise money to help them out and show how much they are appreciated.  If you want to help but can’t participate in the race for whatever reason, you can help in other ways, just ask how you can get involved!

Registration is $30 (if you sign up before October 1st) which includes a fashionable T-shirt as well as race day snacks. Please invite your friends, significant other, and anyone else who might join. There will be prizes for:

  • Five fastest runners

  • Fastest Lincoln clinic patient

  • Fastest housestaff

  • Fastest faculty

  • Fastest runners under 12 years old

  • Most creative outfit

Please email Ryan Duffy if you have any questions or concerns ryan.duffy@duke.edu.
