Internal Medicine Residency News, Oct. 19, 2020

From the Director

This is a big week for residencies around the country! ERAS for medical student applications opens on Wednesday. To all the 4th year students….You’ve got this!

We had another successful COVID-safe mini intern retreat, group 2!  With rain in the forecast, we were able to pivot from  Duke Gardens to Wallace Wade and then the skies held off, and we didn’t need the covered walkway regardless. Thanks Chiefs and Drs. Butterly and Boggan for a great afternoon. And to those who covered for the interns!

Reminder: GO GET YOUR FLU SHOT IF YOU HAVEN’T.

Early voting is open at the Karsh Alumni Center (Durham County residents). Make a plan to vote. We will hold that pager … just ask.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Austin  Wesevich, Stacy  Bagrova and Carlos Rivera for awesome SAR talks, to Bhavik Patel from  Dr. Rachel Hughes for outstanding POCUS and exam skills to  help care for a patient and to JD Davy from Dr. Hughes for his fantastic team leadership, to Ryan Keane from Jan Dillard for patient-centered  care at the DOC, to SeaBass Franco from Chris Asuzu for help in the MICU, to Peggy Sahu and Hope Glowacki from  Joyce Hwang for stepping up on VA Hosp, to the 9300 crew of Emily Romanoff,  Daniel Bernstein and Gabriela Kraiter (kudos from each to the other!) for being a fantastic team, to Maxine Chan from Bari Rosenberg for flu shot championing, to Vinay Choksi from  Ashley Thrower for team leadership, to the CAD NF crew of Roshni Dhoot, Pooja Patel and Ricky Woodward from Tanziyah Muqueem for teamwork, and to Yoli Guzman from Dr. Suchita Sata for excellent work and skill running RRTs.

Clinic Corner: PRIME

Contributed by Leigh Wynkoop and Sonal Patel

Getting to know you board at PRIME ClinicPRIME is expanding our face-to-face care in our gap clinics with more availability each day.

Interns have recently been learning  about chronic pain management including PRIME’s processes for managing pain medications and supplemental resources available through the VA for pain management.

Please be sure to see our wall of “Getting to Know You” with blurbs from our interns and photos of people/places/things near and dear to them – lots of beautiful travel photos which are giving all of us wanderlust while we’re here in good ol’ Durham.

Please say hello to our new front door screener, Ms. Octavia Bass-Pearson, who will greet you with a smile daily.

A special thanks to all our PRIME residents and staff. Thanks for everything!

Call for applications: UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship
The UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship was founded in 2018 and received ACGME accreditation in April 2019. The fellowship is supported by both the NC Department of Human and Health Services (NC DHHS) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to train 8 Addiction Medicine physicians annually. The vision of the UNC Addiction Medicine Fellowship is to expand capacity for addiction treatment in North Carolina, with emphasis on training physicians in team-based care with an understanding of how to provide high quality addiction treatment to underserved populations. The fellowship is designed to prepare graduates for careers in community-based or academic Addiction Medicine and provides training in team-based care in multiple settings, including detox, pain management, inpatient consults, UNC Horizons (a residential substance use program for pregnant and parenting women), and outpatient treatment.  New in 2020, fellows will have a community-telehealth rotation, where they will train at one of five FQHC partnering training sites, providing addiction treatment in community based settings with significant need for OUD treatment. Learn more.

The UNC Addiction Medicine fellowship is currently accepting applications through ERAS for the 2021-2022 academic year.
