Internal Medicine Residency News, Oct. 7, 2019

From the Director

Happy Fall Y’all!  Very much enjoying the non-90 degree temperatures here in N.C. Hope it allowed you to get in a little jog to get ready for the STEAD TREAD on Oct. 26!!! Fall means other things as well … over-run by pumpkin spice, Doctoberfest trivia, Turkey Bowl prep, and of course GETTING YOUR FLU SHOT. If I had to rank these in order of importance, I would have to say GET YOUR FLU SHOT. Quick, easy, generally painless, and required. Protects you and your patients. It's free.

ResCo is excited to have helped organize Division Nights at Thirsty Thursdays – stay tuned for the calendar – we have them booked through February 2019, with more to be scheduled soon! Many thanks to our Division Chiefs for sponsoring nights out with faculty and residents.

Kudos
This week’s kudos go to Eric Powers for an awesome chair’s conference, E-beth Ockerman for a great SAR talk, to Peggy Sahu from Neha Kayastha for outstanding patient centered care on 9100, to everyone who is covering SARs during interview season from the chiefs, to Dylan Ryan from Austin Wesevich for great care of a patient in the ED, to Andrew Morgan from former chief and current pulm attending Coral Giovacchini for wonderful bedside manner, to Sam Rauch, Dennis Narcisse, Anish BadjatyaRyan Keane and Anthony Horton from Jon Reichstein for excellent patient care at the VA, and to Dennis Narcisse for stepping up and initiating ACLS on a plane! Additional kudos for Leigh Wynkoop from Caroline Sloan, who said "Leigh works tirelessly to ensure that the PRIME residents have the best possible experience (given the VA’s constraints) and regularly steps in to see their patients herself, if there are last-minute clinic cancellations or switches. I am so impressed with how PRIME is run, and Leigh plays a huge role in that."

Special thanks to all the residents and faculty who were so gracious with their time and helped out with a recruitment photo project last week: Tamara Saint-Surin, Lynn Bowlby, Jessica Regan, Hayley Cunningham, Sarah Dillon, Michael Cosiano, Sara Coles, Katie Pollard, Dennis Narcisse, Jenny Van Kirk, Bill Hargett, James Helzberg, Chester Kao, Trent Wei, Payton Kendsersky, Cindy Pabon, and Lonnie Sullivan.

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to recent grad/current onc fellow Kristen Batich for her recent publication, "Operative and peri-operative considerations in the management of brain metastasis." Sankey EW, Tsvankin V, Grabowski MM, Nayar G, Batich KA, Risman A, Champion CD, Salama AKS, Goodwin CR, Fecci PE. Cancer Med. 2019 Sep 30. doi: 10.1002/cam4.2577. [Epub ahead of print] Review.

Have a great week!

Clinic Corner: DOC

Rooming a challenge for your patients?
Great news! Nursing will not pursue a medication review if it is apparent the patient doesn't know their meds. Nursing will continue the rooming, but not spend time on the Med Review when patients don't know their meds. We do the Med Reconciliation, nursing does the Medication Review. This should speed up the rooming process, since we are also going over the patients' medications.

As always, you can see the patient before the VS, etc., is done, and they can be done after the visit.

Thanks for all you do for the DOC!
Lynn and Co.

Narrative Medicine
The Narrative Medicine group will hold its first session of the year Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Med Res Library. Dr. Galanos will precept this session. The theme for this session will be "Transitions." If you are interested in writing a piece, feel free to write about anything this word might bring to your mind. Please limit your piece to less than 1,000 words and email Govind Krishnan your piece by next Monday, Oct. 7. The narrative medicine sessions are considered a safe space: whatever is shared in our session, we ask that you keep private as well without express permission to share it with others. As always, food will be provided! Email Govind Krishnan to RVSP; the size of the group will be limited to 10.

Carrying Grief
This session is a confidential space to discuss personal grief and how it intersects with our professional lives as physicians. It is not uncommon for house officers to experience significant losses and deaths in their personal lives, outside of work. What are the strategies individuals have developed for living with that grief and for being able to carry it while working as a medical trainee?

Carrying Grief is an opportunity to:

  • Realize there are others in our community struggling with personal loss
  • Hear from peers about their experiences and reflections
  • Support your community by holding space for each other in difficult times

The first session will be held Tuesday Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in DMP 2W96. Food and drinks will be provided. Contact Jared Lowe with questions.

Feeling down? Need to talk to someone? Opportunities for Wellness
