From the Director

Doctoberfest 2016 is coming to a close! We will have the results of our We Care Week charity voting on Monday at our Doctoberfest lunch. Also to happen at Doctoberfest lunch are the prizes for winners of the trivia questions and the drawing for the “highlight the awesome work of your colleague” project. Thanks to all for your participation. Nathaniel Moulton was our winner of the first giveaway of Duke basketball tickets (from the Zaas family and Dr. Harvey Cohen). Be on the lookout for more tickets this year!

From what I hear, the ResCo hosted a fantastic Halloween party at the home of JAR Mike Powers! Thanks to all who planned the party and to Mike and family for being such generous hosts!

With the close of Doctoberfest comes RECRUITMENT 2016! Hard to believe, but the suits will be here this week—we have prelims on Tuesday and our first categorical day on Friday. Please pay attention to the emails from Madi; we are always in need of TOUR GUIDES and MY TAKE residents. Being a tour guide takes about 30-40 minutes and My Take is about 10 minutes, so take a look at your schedules and get on Madi’s schedule to help bring in an AMAZING class of interns.

Some other notes about recruitment days:

  • Lunch on recruitment days gives you time to chat it up with the applicants. Join us in the MED RES LIBRARY at 12 on Mondays and 12:30 on Fridays to eat lunch with the applicants. Meeting and talking with residents is the best part of the day for our future Duke residents, so please make sure to spread out around the room and get to meet as many people as possible!  Med Peds interview days start next week, so details about that to follow in next week’s news!
  • VA/Duke resident report on Mondays during recruitment season happens at 1 PM as a combined report in the Med Res library. Adam and Alyson and the Duke/VA ACRs (thanks Sam and Ani) have the schedule; we typically alternate weeks where a Duke SAR or VA JAR is responsible for the case presentation.
  • Chair’s Conference on Fridays is at 11:30 in Room 2002, followed by lunch at 12:15.

Thanks in advance for making this recruitment season successful!!!

Kudos

Kudos this week to Manisha Bhattacharya from Nilesh Patel for handling a challenging situation overnight; to Sipa Yankey from Karen Barnard for going above and beyond to help out a colleague at the VA; to Megan Dupuis and Zach Il’Giovine from both Jenny Van Kirk and Ovais Inamullah for amazing teamwork and support for the CAD interns at night; to Ovais Inamullah, Justin Yoo and Tessa Genders for outstanding work on CAD nights from Jenny Van Kirk; to Lakshmi Krishnan and Ben Ranard for awesome work on 9100 nights; and to Div Patel for a great SAR talk (on a non-cardiology topic!).

Residency Professional Development Coaching Program

The Coaching Program has some big happenings this week as well. We will be doing coach matching today (thanks to all who filled out their preference form), and you will hear about your coach this week. There will be a short pre-coaching program survey coming out and then a meet your coaches happy hour on Friday. Looking forward to really getting started!

PubMed from the Program

This week’s PubMed from the Program goes to Lauren Collins for her poster at ID Week in New Orleans: Incidence and Long Term Outcomes of Patients with HIV and Disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection from 1992-2015, with mentors Meredith Clement and Jason Stout.

Have a great week!

Aimee

Clinic Corner: PRIME

  • Shout out to those residents who attending our first PRIME steering committee meeting: AJ, Zach, Shannon, Sam, and Megan. We got good input about ways we can make PRIME a great place to learn while providing optimal patient care. We’re sorting through your suggestions to see if/how we can make them happen.
  • We are trying to get CEXs done on days when we have a low resident to preceptor ratio—residents, do your part to try to get them checked off.
  • If you aren’t clear on how to use your red/yellow/green/black team list of anticipated rotations when you’re writing your RTC order, please check with us; we are making a concerted effort to improve patient-provider continuity and this is a key piece.
  • See Leigh Winkoop or Sonal Patel if you’re having ongoing problems with remote access.  We request that you check your alerts at least twice a week to address your patients’ needs.
  • Soon we should have the ability to use open-access ortho scheduling; we will let you know more about that once staff has been trained.
  • We can’t wait to meet new Baby Boy Ground! Congrats to Kelly and Matt!
  • Send Leigh pictures of your kids and/or pets to post in the staff area for us to puzzle out whose is whose!
