Clinic Corner: Ambulatory

Continuity Clinic Survey
Be on the lookout in October for a survey to give us feedback about your continuity clinic experience, which will launch in MedHub.

 Ambulatory Threads updates
Interns and JARs on the 4+2 schedule have Ambulatory Threads in most of their +2 blocks, bundles of clinical subspecialties where you can gain some continuity with certain attendings over the course of six month, then switch mid-year. As we emerged from phase I of COVID disruptions, many changes occurred in the sub-specialties regarding clinic scheduling and logistics, and this has affected the threads. We’ve drawn on some GIM opportunities such as obesity clinics to fill in gaps as a result. As we step back and reevaluate the status of each division in post-COVID times, it’s clear that adjustments are needed. We will be working on a re-shuffling of the thread combinations to better distribute clinic availability and bolster your clinical experiences. These changes will go into effect in July 2022. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and as always we welcome your feedback!

 The 2021 launch of the Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track
The Advocacy in Clinical Leadership Track (ACLT) has gotten rolling for the year, starting this block. Founded in 2012, the ACLT is an elective track for second and third year residents which focuses on health policy and advocacy. Residents come together during ambulatory clinical time, with weekly academic seminars on Friday afternoons. Participating in the ACLT does not change the length of training, though it may conflict with some other elective opportunities. The curriculum includes:

• Advocacy and health policy seminars given by faculty in government relations and health policy throughout the year, covering topics such as the legislative process, public health insurance structure, health finance, policy regarding social drivers, how to make a pitch, and more.
• Advocacy trip in the spring to either Washington DC or Raleigh, NC, alternating years. Residents create a platform based on issues they wish to address as a group and meet directly with lawmakers at the state and national level to present their views.
• Seminars in leadership and career planning

Now Accepting Applications for Global Health Elective Rotations
The Hubert-Yeargan Center for Global Health (HYC) is now accepting applications for eight week Global Health Elective Rotations for July 2022, January 2023 and March 2023. (Please note that while we hope rotations can begin in July 2022, we continue to monitor pandemic conditions at home and abroad and will schedule/modify rotations in coordination with Duke Travel/GTAC and Program Directors.)

Application is open to Duke Residents from the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics:Internal Medicine (PGY 2), Med-Peds (PGY 3), Med-Psych (PGY 4), Pediatrics (PGY 2), Neurology (PGY 3) and Radiology (PGY 4). Click here for the application.

Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship Opportunity
Northwestern University’s Division of Hospital Medicine is now accepting applications for their Academic Hospital Medicine Fellowship. This two-year fellowship is designed to provide advanced training to junior hospitalists to launch them into successful academic careers. The program includes formal training, mentorship, and a capstone project. Each fellow receives protected time, ranging from 25-75%, as they focus their training in 1 of 3 areas: Quality Improvement, Medical Education, or Health Services and Outcomes Research. Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education

Duke University is cohosting the third annual public summit of the National Academies’ Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. President Vincent Price will give the opening remarks, and Provost Sally Kornbluth will close the event with final remarks. Registration is free to attend the online event.

2021 Stead Tread 5K Fun Run/Walk
You are invited to sign up to participate in the annual Stead Tread 5K fun run/walk on Saturday October 16th at 9:00 AM on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham.

We will start and finish the race at Solite Park and will have an award ceremony and hang out afterward. 100% of the proceeds from this race benefit Lincoln Clinic, which provides health care to the medically underserved population of Durham. Lincoln has been a huge asset to Durham for decades, but especially over this past year. So, I hope we can pitch in to raise money to help them out and show how much they are appreciated.  If you want to help but can’t participate in the race for whatever reason, you can help in other ways, just ask how you can get involved!

Registration is $30 (if you sign up before October 1st) which includes a fashionable T-shirt as well as race day snacks. Please invite your friends, significant other, and anyone else who might join. There will be prizes for:

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
