Internal Medicine Residency News, Sept. 8, 2020

From the Director

It’s a Tuesday kind of Med Res News day. For those of you with some “+2” time on this holiday weekend, I hope you were able to enjoy the amazing weather. Totally biased but fall is the BEST here in N.C.

Kudos
Kudos this week go to Yoli Guzman for being part of a phenomenal Medicine Grand Rounds, from Dr. Laura Caputo to her VA GM Teams, "I have been tremendously impressed with the levels of collegiality, professionalism and patient centered-ness that everyone has brought with them." Team members were Peggy Sahu, Joyce Hwang, Ryan Slauer, Brandon Durant, Roshni Dhoot and Emilio Guzman Cisneros. Also kudos to our first TACOS CHAMPION Bari Rosenberg. Check out our @imresidencyduke Instagram for the live interview with Bhavik Patel. Also kudos to Andrew Andreae, James Helzberg and Lynsey Michnowicz (from Ryan Keane, and the rest of us who didn’t kudos them) for putting together the 2020-21 Patagonia order, to/from Roshni Dhoot and Harsh Patolia for their roles in taking great care of a patient at the VA, to Komal Safdar and Kirstin Binz from Matt Abbott for excellent VA GM work (and back to Matt from Komal!) and to AD Khatri from Matt Labriola for some Labor Day heroics!

Speaking of Patagonias (also known as the residency tuxedo), check your email for information from Lynsey about how to order if you wish to.

Thank you to Lynsey as well for coordinating our amazing interview spaces in the Med Res Offices – and to Matt and Ahmad for setting things up.

PubMed from the Program
This week’s pubmed from the program goes to Callie Berkowitz for her Annals of Internal Medicine Fresh Look piece “Finding Meaning in the ICU.”

Have a great week!
Aimee

Nominate a Shero for Women in Medicine Month
During the month of September, the Department of Medicine will honor women physicians as part of the annual Women in Medicine Month, a national campaign to highlight the accomplishments of women physicians, scientists, educators, and leaders in medicine. The DOM Program for Women in Internal Medicine (PWIM) will coordinate our celebration of Women in Medicine Month, and we ask you to participate by nominating a colleague who you consider to be a DOM shero – tell us how she inspires you and why she is your hero. Sheroes will be highlighted throughout the month of September on the department’s website and Twitter account. Read about DOM Sheroes and nominate a Shero.

All trainees at Duke have FREE access to Personal Assistance Services (PAS), which is the faculty/employee assistance program of Duke University. The staff of licensed professionals offer confidential assessment, short-term counseling, and referrals to help resolve a range of personal, work, and family problems. PAS services are available free of charge to Duke faculty and staff, and their immediate family members. An appointment to meet with a PAS counselor may be arranged by calling the PAS office at 919-416-1PAS (919-416-1727), Monday through Friday between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. For assistance after hours, residents and fellows can call the Blood and Body Fluid Hotline (115 inside DUH, 919-684-1115 outside) for referral to behavioral health resources. Another resource is Duke Outpatient Psychiatry Referrals at (919) 684-0100 or 1-888-ASK-DUKE. https://www.hr.duke.edu/pas/
