Victor J. Dzau, MD, chancellor for health affairs and CEO of DUHS, and Nancy Andrews, MD, PhD, dean of the School of Medicine! shared the following news with faculty today. We wanted to share with you that Danny Jacobs, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery, will be leaving Duke to serve as Executive Vice President, Provost and Dean at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. This is a wonderful opportunity for Danny and while we recognize what it offers him in terms of greater responsibilities and scope of involvement, we are nevertheless sorry to see him go. Danny will be staying at Duke through the end of September to ensure a seamless transition of responsibilities. Dr. Theodore Pappas has agreed to serve as interim chair, until a new chair is named. Over his 10 years at Duke, Danny has proven himself to be a highly effective leader, committed to the success of all three missions within the Department of Surgery. He will leave Duke with the department being stronger than when he arrived and in a good position for his successor to continue the legacy of success that is Duke Surgery.
