This week, JAMA published an article written by William Yancy,MD, Matthew Maciejewski, PhD, and others showing between bariatric surgery and increased long-term survival among obese middle-aged patients in the VA health system. The retrospective cohort study found that patients who underwent bariatric surgery at 5 years and up to 10 years after the procedure. This study strengthens the existing body of evidence showing the benefits of bariatric surgery on survival that has been demonstrated on younger, mostly female populations.
