The Joseph C. Greenfield Visiting Professor of Medicine Lecture Series kicks off this month with four Medicine Grand Round sessions in 2022.
Each year the Department of Medicine (DOM) chief residents invite and host a visiting professor at Medicine Grand Rounds. This
lecture is named in honor of the late Joseph Greenfield, MD, James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine, chair of the DOM from 1983 to 1995, and as chief of the Division of Cardiology from 1981 to 1989.
Greenfield, who died in October 2020 at the age of 89, was a pioneer in cardio-vascular medicine, a prolific researcher and sincerely invested in mentorship and trainees, especially the career development of Duke’s chief residents.
Greenfield started the Greenfield Scholars Program that continues to support many resident and junior faculty research careers. In his honor, the DOM established the Joseph Greenfield Research Mentorship Award to recognize faculty members who excel in research mentorship. The Joseph C. Greenfield Endowment also honors him by providing support for chief residents in the DOM.
Greenfield received international recognition for his work, his research interests involving defining the factors that regulate coronary blood flow, as well as development of the electrocardiogram to enhance clinical care. He was also involved in many clinical trials on heart and vascular diseases.
He was a beloved figure at the School of Medicine and led a fascinating life. Read more about him in the words of his former colleagues.
The Greenfield series will be presented in a hybrid Zoom and inf-person format. All faculty and trainees are encouraged to attend. The in-person location is located within Duke North 2002 and will be streamed live.
