Krishnan selected 2020-21 VA chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety

Govind Krishnan, MDGovind Krishnan, MD, senior assistant resident in the combined Medicine-Pediatrics residency training program, has been selected to serve as the Durham VA Medical Center Chief Resident for Quality and Safety (CRQS) for 2020-21.

During his chief resident year, Dr. Krishnan will be part of a network of such chief residents across the country who lead quality improvement (QI) projects and receive expert training from mentors. He also will participate in a national curriculum designed to prepare a new generation of QI leaders able to help residents implement QI initiatives.

"Govind has distinguished himself throughout residency leading projects on preventive care and helping to lead the program's Narrative Medicine efforts,” said Kathleen Cooney, MD, Chair of the Department of Medicine. “He will be a tremendous asset to the training program."

Krishnan will work closely with Joel Boggan, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) and CRQS mentor; David Simel, MD, Chairman of Medicine at the Durham VA; and previous and current chiefs, including Ryan Schulteis, MD, and Lara Hayes, MD.

"The CRQS role will be integral in my career development," said Krishnan. "The chief residency year will provide me with tangible skills in data analytics, and I hope to take these skills into my pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship. I see myself translating these skills into projects looking at transitional care for adolescents with complex pulmonary disease and their variable outcomes."

Krishnan earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha.

Krishnan will begin as chief resident for quality improvement and patient safety in July 2020. He will join 2020-2021 chief residents Matthew Labriola, MD; Stephanie Garbarino, MD; and Hannah Dzimitrowicz, MD. After his year as chief resident, Krishnan plans to pursue a career in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
