Kyle Jackson, MD, a second-year endocrinology fellow, was honored this week by Duke University Hospital with a Strength, Hope and Caring Award.
Dr. Jackson was recognized for his extraordinary care of a complex patient with Type 1 diabetes and an insulin allergy. Noted nominator Liz Bell, a nurse practitioner on the diabetes management service, Jackson exhausted "numerous innovative outlets to try and provide sound care for this patient," and after several weeks, "it was Kyle who requested a multidisciplinary team conference on this patient twice that facilitated the treatment plan that eventually allowed this woman to be discharged on a safe and effective insulin regimen.
"With so many other experts and attendings weighing in on [the patient's] care it would have been easy for Kyle to allow someone else to do the leg work or planning for this patient, but he really embraced his responsibility to this patient and dedicated far more hours than would be expected to coordinating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary care approach that left no treatment option unexplored for this patient," wrote Bell. "I am so impressed with Kyle’s dedication to his patients and his work ethic. It is such a rarity these days and that is why I feel he deserves to be honored with this award."
The Strength, Hope and Caring Program awards employees who go well beyond expectations and whose actions reflect the very core of who we are as an organization - one that provides strength to people when they are suffering, and hope to the people we serve, and one that provides care even beyond the clinical sense of the word.
