LeBlanc chosen as palliative medicine research scholar

Tom LeBlanc, MD, MA, current fellow in both hospice and palliative medicine and medical oncology and former chief resident, learned this month that he's been chosen as a 2012 Research Scholar by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM).
The AAHPM chooses just 6 fellows/junior faculty for the award each year, and for the last several years there's been at least one person from Duke on the list. Arif Kamal, MD, was a recipient in 2011.
"I'm happy to keep this trend going," said Dr. LeBlanc.
It's a wonderfully exciting opportunity, as it provides funding for me to attend the annual Kathleen Foley Retreat, which is a remarkable educational/research opportunity that also facilitates networking, mentorship, and possible inroads towards a career development award in subsequent years.
LeBlanc expressed appreciation for the mentorship he's received from Amy Abernethy, MD, associate professor of medicine (Medical Oncology) and James Tulsky, MD, professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) during his time here at Duke. "It is only due to their guidance that such things are possible."
